Helping founders navigate the the tension between customers, tech and progress. It's been a privilege to be part of the program co-design and co-delivery and the great things coming out of Newcastle.I was the EIR to 60 odd teams 100+ founders, an experience that taught me just so much.
  • Diffuse Energy
    Co-Founder
    Diffuse Energy Apr 2018 - Nov 2024
Diffuse Energy is a startup who have designed the world’s most efficient small wind turbine. These turbines will see application globally in micro-grid and remote locations. Diffuse Energy Successfully completed the CSIRO On Prime and accelerate programs and have recently deployed the first turbine for in field-testing.There are many current microgrids with solar + battery + diesel with diesel being a significant cost both financially and environmentally. The addition of a secondary input of a small wind turbine to these systems can significantly reduce diesel usage. Our first turbine the Hyland 920 is market ready and serves small microgrids to offset diesel usage, especially for remote telecommunications. It has the highest output for its size (920 mm diameter) on the market, it is rated at 220W at 11m/s and in high wind conditions can generate as much as 1kW. Depending on the site, you can expect between 400-600 kWh P/A for each Hyland Wind turbine. They can supply 12, 24, 48 V systems.Soon we will develop a larger model at approximately 3000 mm diameter that will generate in the order of 4-6 MWh P/A.We are happy to work with all microgrid suppliers to improve the performance of their grids while maintaining a small footprint.

Developing prototype applications for MGA (Miscible Gap Alloys) materials to provide practical use for stored thermal energies. MGA's are a new type of thermal storage material developed at the University of Newcastle and are in the very early stages. They offer a promising solution to having a usable energy source 24/7 driven by a concentrated solar array, having both higher energy densities and without the safety concerns of other technologies currently being used.

ON is Australia's sci-tech innovation accelerator dedicated to unearthing amazing research and steering it towards high potential innovative ventures. Established by CSIRO in 2015, ON specialises in assisting researchers from the fields of science and technology working on projects that have the potential to shape Australia's future.Diffuse Wind Energy's product is a small wind turbine that, through being enclosed within a diffuser, can produce nearly twice the power output of existing wind turbines of the same size. Their additional diffuser also makes their turbine safer and quieter than existing turbines, both of which are key considerations for potential customers.
