I have had the most fulfilling, fun career over the last 30 years, and with Koloso, it feels as if things are only just beginning! Most of my professional life has been about promoting economic development and contributing to the fight to eradicate poverty, often living and working in challenging post-conflict locations. I have had some amazing experiences and I have met some fantastic people; completing large privatisation deals in Bulgaria, Romania, Macedonia and Azerbaijan, advising on private sector development policy and running an investment challenge fund in Afghanistan, and working on markets and value chain development in places like Somaliland, Nigeria, Bangladesh and Zambia. But after all of that, I have decided to do my own thing. From managing other people's money, running other people's projects and advising other people how to run their businesses, I have become a small time impact investor and entrepreneur in my own right. Just over 2 years ago, I joined with my co-founders Petra and Sowi to create Koloso - an edtech business focused on assessment for learning, based in Zambia. I love how we work together - our shared, determined pursuit of excellence, social impact and commercial success - and the freedom to be creative that comes with running our own business. We have our first customers, and we have recruited some great people to build a fab team based in Lusaka - it really is exciting to see how everything is aligning. Yes, it is hard work, but my goodness it is fun! I kind of wish I made the move some time ago... but not really, everything has its time!
