About James Boyd

Whatdunnit? Ta-da! The relief on a client’s face when I nail the ‘root-cause’, is both fulfilling and gratifying. This is often the first step on their journey with Continuous Improvement (CI).I make the work easier, safer, better, quicker and consequently, cheaper - in that order, because it’s the only order that works – period. As director of UnrAVEL this Limited, I am a process ‘detective’. I support clients to find and reduce poor quality and performance in their business or organisational processes. Put another way, I help clients increase their yields and throughput with consequently reduced costs and increased profits.I use an objective ‘whatdunnit’ approach which is more effective, efficient and ethical than the traditional ‘whodunnit’ blame-seeking method. My clients, typically SMEs, come from a very diverse range of manufacturing and service sectors. After guitars and electronics I found myself in the world of software testing. This experience led me to a career with a blue-chip US computer manufacturer. Leading a very talented team, we transformed the approach to development of our global manufacturing test software. Learning from this helped us produce a process with an Agile-esque feel.I was a member of a global audit team – tasked with improving the supply chain quality of ‘Enterprise’ level products. I got to see a chunk of the world into the bargain (Asia, Europe & USA).I use to get frustrated by the deluge of ‘fire-fighting’ issues. My ‘lightbulb’ moment came when I realised that this *is* the daily reality for many businesses and organisations. We had a major supply-chain quality issue on a ‘cash cow’ product. We were ‘line down’ - we couldn’t build or ship product. There was $100million of revenue at stake that quarter alone. I learned a lot about my organisation, the people I worked with and myself.• Largest decrease in quality defects 100%• Largest increase in performance 100%• Largest financial saving: estimated at $100M in quarterly revenue• Longest running issue resolved: estimated at minimum 13+ years(that is as far back as the records went!)I’m still working to improve my listening, thinking, speaking and writing skills through Toastmasters International (TI) and still twanging away on my guitars too but I’ll never make a rock legend!I do love a good cup of ‘builders’ tea.Time for a chat? Email jim@unravel-this.com, call +44(0)7763 225827 or message me.My ‘cup of tea’… Change Management, Continuous Improvement, Lean Management, Agile, Value Stream Mapping, Root-cause analysis and Learning.

  • Unravel This
    Director
Unravel This Nov 2012 - Present
    Linlithgow
    * CEng * Chartered Engineer * Problem Analyst and Process Improvement Specialist at UnrAVEL this Limited
  • Brand-Rex
    Senior Supplier Quality Engineer
    Brand-Rex Sep 2010 - Jun 2012
Moving into a different sector, I discovered that my observations from my time at Sun were equally applicable in this more materials based sector. Working with both copper and fibre-optic customer installations, performing engineering failure analysis and managing supply chain quality in Asia, Europe and UK, I successfully resolved several of the most significant issues which impacted customer quality. These contributed to credit from and claims against suppliers totalling more than £300k annually but more importantly added value for the customers by resolving the issues at source.
  • Sun Microsystems
    Global Product Engineering Manager
    Sun Microsystems Sep 2006 - Feb 2010
Promoted to this role, I led a team of ten US/UK engineers in managing all aspects of supply chain quality for Sun's high-end Enterprise and Netra products - with over $500M annual turnover. Working with suppliers in Asia, US and UK, I was responsible for both sustaining and new product introduction (NPI) products. During this time I had to manage numerous significant quality issues, some of which threatened shipments and customer satisfaction. These drove my curiosity in problem solving and forced me to seriously challenge some existing practices including e.g. supplier sub-tier quality management, test yield measurement methods, failure analysis capability and overall quality planning.
  • Sun Microsystems
    Principal Test Engineer
    Sun Microsystems Sep 1998 - Sep 2006
Having been the only one to state he had some experience with change management, I found myself as Sun Engineering Operation's Change Control Program Manager. Using Rational Software tools i.e. ClearDDTS and Clearcase, I managed a team of six engineers in UK and US to design and develop a holistic technical change management system which included; requirements entry/tracking, software configuration management (SCM), release and deployment management. In addition, I introduced an acceptance testing system which radically improved the robustness of the manufacturing test software and the whole internal supplier/customer relationship.Frustrated with the seemingly endless variety of change requests, I also developed a simple approach to categorising changes which greatly improved prioritisation and the overall effectiveness of the system.Laterally, I was seconded onto the Sun global quality audit team which visited contract manufacturers, material hubs, in-house manufacturing and service centres in Asia, US and UK, delivering a range of process and quality improvements on Sun's legacy Enterprise products.Established Proclaimers@Sun, a corporate club within Toastmasters International, which helped members to develop and improve their communication and leadership skills.
  • Sun Microsystems
    Senior Test Engineer
    Sun Microsystems Sep 1997 - Aug 1998
As a member of the Operations Sustaining Test Support team I was responsible for the maintenance of Sun's manufacturing test systems - lots of day-to-day troubleshooting. During this period it became obvious to me that there was insufficient communication, co-ordination and effectiveness regarding test system maintenance. This channelled the next stage of my career at Sun.
  • Mentor_1
    Test Engineer
    Mentor_1 Jul 1992 - Aug 1997
When DMS became Mentor_1, I moved into a more support oriented and customer facing role. After program managing a software development project for a US customer, I became heavily involved in the test and installation of systems. After reading Myers, 'The Art of Software Testing', I discovered I also had a flare for sofware and systems testing and troubleshooting - so mush so, that certain customers requested that I manage their factory acceptance test. I also developed and successfully delivered five day training programs for customers in e.g. oil, gas and steel applications.
  • Diagnostics And Measuring Systems
    Electronic Design Engineer
Diagnostics And Measuring Systems Jan 1989 - Jun 1992
DMS designed, manufactured and marketed a range of data acquisition systems used in process monitoring applications within e.g. paper and steel mills and other industrial plants. I played a major role in the redesign of numerous electrical and electronic modules together with the design of a newer more rugged and robust system, suitable for use in harsher IP rated environments. Again, I was complemented by the Manufacturing Manager on the quality of my work instruction communications which set an internal standard.
  • Intellemetrics
    Electronic Design Engineer
    Intellemetrics Mar 1986 - Jan 1989
Intellemetrics designed, manufactured and marketed a range of monitors and controllers used in high-vacuum, thin-film deposition systems e.g. thermal and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). After some initial work to improve the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of existing products, I was heavily involved in the design, development and testing of a new family of products. It was here I had my first interaction with contract electronic manufacturing (CEM) service companies - where I was complemented on the quality of my work instruction communications. I represented the company with customers and at trade shows in Japan and China.
  • Future Technology Developments
    Electronic Design Engineer
Future Technology Developments Jan 1985 - Feb 1986
A switch to the commercial sector where, with the departure of the lead engineer for the first Future Technology Systems' colour PC motherboard, I was handed the task of debugging the board. Virtually nothing worked as delivered, so this was my introduction to problem solving on a larger, albeit purely technical, scale.
  • Racal Defence Radar Systems
    Electronic Design Engineer
Racal Defence Radar Systems Aug 1983 - Dec 1984
My first post-grad job where I successfully re-designed and developed a variety of electronic circuit boards used in a millimetric radar system. Supported field trials where I had my first experience of fighter ground attack (FGA) aircraft on a bombing range - wow!Being defence work, there was little room for error. Even at this early stage I realised the significance of the idiom, "the devil is in the detail".Quickly developed admiration and respect for my first manager who introduced me to the skills of organisation, planning and effective teamwork.
