James Burns is a Electric Transportation and Energy Systems Devotee at L3 Research Group. Having researched hybrid electric car drivetrain technologies and staying current since my college era electric car project at RPI in Troy N.Y, in 1980, I was very impressed by the technology designed and employed in the Enigma bio-diesel plug-in hybrid car Jim designed and built with his students at SDSU Mechanical Engineering program. Judging by the grants awarded to his program many others in industry and the government also felt the same way. I proposed creating a new project joint venture between his company L3R and my company QWC, to commercialize this type of technology in a brand new plug-in hybreid electric sports car design and we worked closely together to try to fund this effort for almost 2 years. What I learned from the SDSU students, and other SDSU faculty and staff is that Jim demonstrated amazing abilities to not only get his students motivated to build truly state-of-the-art well engineered vehicles but do so on a very limited budget and in the face of adversity with little to no support from SDSU and sometimes with actual "negative, de-moralizing and counter-productive" efforts from the SDSU Mechanical department. These are very transferable skills to industry which I hope to take full advantage of in the near future. His communication and presentation skills are quite effective and I would definitely hire Jim for future technology company ventures, projects or consulting or should those opportunities arise."
