At Ulzi I've enjoyed learning about Jira and incorporating myself into the workflow as a Software Tester in the development of a Mobile App. The weekly stand-ups and the day-to-day guidance of a mentor at Ulzi have been a great start to my career as a Software Tester and I'm looking forward to gaining more experience in this field.

The Ticket into tech Program offered by SLO Partners in association with CodeSLO, Cal Poly, and Fullstack Academy Online is the brainchild of Dan Weeks (Entrepreneur in residence at Cal Poly Hot House, Co-Founder of the Cal Poly Computer Science and Software Engineering Advisory Board) and Matt West (Owner at CodeSLO LLC) along with all of their friends at the Cal Poly Hot House and partners in industry throughout the San Luis Obispo area. This program was offered in the structure of an evening class with code-along lectures, beginning with an 8 week HTML, CSS, and Javascript bootcamp. During this bootcamp we had a Hackathon where we spent 8 hours on a Saturday building a simple project with an assigned team to help expose us to the use of Github in a workflow. At the end of this bootcamp there was an online test to assess our capabilities with Javascript followed by a Software Testers training group taught by Mike Maxwell (VP Technology at Hathway) and Rita Cassaverde (International Product Manager at Transunion) as a series of code along lectures that introduced us to the tools Jira, Postman, and Charles Proxy among others. The software testing group had a concurrent requirement to pass 3 exams from the ASTQB: (1) The basic CTFL test to expose us to the qualifications for software testing in general (2) The CTFL Mobile exam, exposing us to the requirements for testing mobile devices (3) The CTFL Agile exam, exposing us to the requirements to participate in an Agile workflow with Scrum teams. Overall it was an effective sieve, sifting applicants for a general aptitude with coding, software, and logic operations in a workflow with a team. Those who finished this program have shown an aptitude for learning to code with Javascript, shape web pages with HTML and CSS, engage in a workflow with other team members using Jira (along with other software tools), and the capability overall to learn and work together. I am happy to be one of them.

My wife Marlena and I owned and operated a local bakery producing custom cakes and dessert bars for weddings and birthdays out of a licensed and inspected home kitchen. We did absolutely everything. It was tough work but truly a pleasure to finish a project, and the cakes Marlena decorated were award winners. During this time I began to explore Javascript, HTML and CSS along with web design and website management with the intent to develop a marketing plan for the bakery. While I was not able to turn up the profits for our business, the exposure to scripting and page design had sparked a latent interest. When the Ticket into Tech program came up I took it as an opportunity to move into a new career.
