I code every working day, yet the main tool for my job is imagination, aided by a whiteboard. I think visually and have been called arm waver in chief in my current role. Programming shouldn’t take much typing, as it’s an intellectual exercise that can be practiced when walking in woods as much as slaving over a hot keyboard. I love communicating and enjoy expressing my ideas whilst presenting or running workshops to build consensus across a team of developers. I am one of the architects for revolutionQ, a sea change in broadcast workflow that uniquely allows broadcasters to not care about the form or location of their essence. An asset that is 10 years old is treated the same as recordings 5 seconds old; globally. Ingest naturally grows an archive. Completely standards based, only using software running on COTS hardware and exploiting the power of AAF, AS-02 and FIMS; the prototype of revolutionQ has already been sold for an eight figure sum to a major US broadcaster. revolutionQ takes the best of the Web architecture (Representational State Transfer – or REST – a type of Service Oriented Architecture) and mixes it with the best of Quantel’s understanding of how to exploit disk technology – utilising the multi-pattented Quantel Virtual File System. revolutionQ won a TV Technology Star award and an IABM Game Changer at NAB 2012.

I created an OO framework to allow five different products to re-use an optimised display engine. I conducted a user study to design Swift, a revolutionary and award winning development in subtitling products. The job involved a lot of international travel for pre - sales demonstrations and post-sales installation, network configuration and diagnostics. The role demanded planning, teamwork, research and problem solving. I persuaded Softel to sponsor my university research and grant me a weekly day release. I regularly trained programming staff at Softel.
