AI has only just begun its likely utterly transformative impact on global economies, labor markets, and the life of almost every individual, of every nation, and of civilization overall. With this new entity, The Future of Employment & Income Institute, we are bringing together many of the world’s most relevant experts to explore how to harness AI’s potential for societal benefit while mitigating its disruptive impacts, particularly as regards its imminent and almost certainly profound impact on employment and income. As the previous convener of the World Summit on Technological Unemployment (2015), previous co-convener of the International Congress for the Governance of AI (ICGAI, 2018-2021), among other related roles (see full profile), I am very excited to work with my phenomenal colleagues to catalyze more urgently needed thought and policy action - particularly in Washington, DC/government - on one of the most crucial challenges facing the world today.

I serve as a key advisor to CorpsAfrica's Founder, as well as provide strategic advice to others in leadership roles. CorpsAfrica is a nonprofit organization that provides young college graduate Africans the opportunity to serve for a year as volunteers in their own countries (and other African countries as well, after a successful first year), primarily focusing on high-impact, community-driven development projects in rural areas. Inspired by the Peace Corps model, CorpsAfrica recruits college-educated, motivated young Africans to live and work in underserved communities, facilitating grassroots development projects that are identified by the community members themselves. This approach aims to empower local populations, build leadership skills among African youth, and promote civic engagement. The volunteers gain hands-on experience in managing projects, fostering a sense of accountability and understanding of local development challenges.

The Global Partnership for Civic Engagement (“The Global Partnership”) is a new non-profit launched in a meeting at the UN Office for Partnerships, to engage citizens and institutions from around the world in more active involvement in addressing the civilization's leading challenges, by convening representative groups of people, and by identifying systemic, innovative initiatives on behalf of others to make it easier for those initiatives to be scaled up. Our current planned programs in the works include:• WORLD CONGRESS. A large-scale, virtual gathering of a cross section of the world's peoples to help clarify humanity's common aspirations for a new, more sustainable and equitable civilization, to create an ongoing "focus group" for humanity, and to provide a way for leading institutions to more effectively and appropriately make progress toward that better world. • BETTER CENTURY AWARDS. Awards presented in ten different categories of civilization - for innovative initiatives seeking to get at the root cause of major challenges and which offer a potential to scale up. Over 1,000 initiatives have already been identified. • 'A BETTER CENTURY' CIVIC ENGAGEMENT SYSTEM. Projects under development focused on making it easier for individuals to engage in supporting in a wide variety of ways the most effective and promising systemic initiatives.

I was the co-founder of Democracy Dinners, a US-focused, civic engagement movement to support democracy during the 2022 US Congressional/mid-term elections at a time of significant, organized threat, via volunteer-hosted dinners and other means to inspire and mobilize thousands of citizens for large scale, friend-and-family-and-neighbors voter registration and voter turnout.

ICGAI, a high-level virtual speaker/panel/planning workshop series, co-organized by me and award-winning technology ethicist and author, Wendell Wallach, based on his ideas developed over many years -- to bring together representatives of governments, industry, international organizations, universities, research centers, leaders of underserved nations and communities, and other stakeholders in the AI space. ICGAI went beyond principles and individual policy proposals to focus on initial steps towards putting in place international mechanisms for the governance of AI. ICGAI was a collaborative initiative directed at catalyzing an agile and comprehensive governance framework for artificial intelligence. (ICGAI was originally scheduled to occur as a three-day, in-person conference in April, 2020, in Prague, Czech Republic, but evolved into a virtual structure due to the global pandemic). ICGAI involved many prominent organizational partners including the World Leadership Alliance/Club of Madrid of former presidents and prime ministers and the Carnegie Council for Ethics in Internationals Affairs, among many others. Oversaw a global association of the most innovative and impactful people and organizations in the science and technology world, as nominated and elected annually by their peers through the World Technology Awards program. Also, convened World Technology Summits (2000-2015) of science and technology leaders, bringing together WTN members (winners/finalists of previous World Technology Awards cycles) and current Award nominees, plus some others, from around the world. Also, convened more focused conferences, such as the World Energy Technologies Summit (2004 and 2010) and the World Summit on Technological Unemployment (2015).

JoinTogether was an app developed to make it easier for millions of Americans to find out where they can donate, volunteer, and/or request urgent needs met during the COVID-19 pandemic... and beyond. It was intended for personal and household use in the United States. It was based on the idea that we are indeed all in this together.

• Arrange and manage media partnerships over the years with such media partners as TIME, Fortune, The Economist, CNN, Science/AAAS, Technology Review, among others.• Oversee a global, multi-month Awards process involving several hundred nominees in 20 different categories.• Develop a program of speakers, panels, exhibits, "demos", and workshops for a high level peer audience.• Serve as Master of Ceremonies for the events.

The New Voter Army was a voter registration campaign created in the lead-up to the 2018 mid-term US elections built around a website that made it easy for eligible US voters to check their voter registration status, register to vote online (in the states where applicable) or receive instructions on how to register offline by mail (in the states where applicable) or in person, and, most importantly, to easily share the website and community with friends/other connections on the primary social media sites, as well as to volunteer to recruit teams of others to do the same (in a sort of walk-a-thon model). And, using the same approach, those in the overall network could also be contacted to work their personal networks to turn out the vote on election day. Fast Company magazine cited the New Voter Army as a new breed of voter registration and get-out-the-vote (GOTV) initiatives that could change the tide of an election.

Organized and convened a global summit held at TIME Inc headquarters (in September 2015) on the topic of technologically-caused unemployment (robotics, automation, AI, 3d printing, etc), bringing together some of the world top experts on related issues, including "basic income" (prominently endorsed publicly for the first time by many key speakers as a likely necessary, future policy in the coming era of increasing technological unemployment). Speakers included: Robert Reich, Larry Summers, and Joe Stiglitz, among many others.

A start-up (built around a web-based/event-based platform model) that never fully got off the ground - focused on helping start-up ventures succeed -- with accelerated access to the people, knowledge, and capital they need.

Was hired to organize and coordinate a global summit on the future of healthcare with partners such as TIME magazine, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC/US Govt), Science/AAAS, among others.

Oversaw a very early Internet/web consulting firm focused on bringing online technologies to the non-profit sector and public service worlds. Primary partner was a start-up company called America Online (AOL), through which we developed some of the first online credit card donations, online volunteerism, professional communities of non-profit managers, and well as online communities for membership organizations/associations.

Oversaw the creation and development of the first national clearinghouse for professional employment in the non-profit sector. Forged partnerships with leading non-profit associations. Published/edited national newspaper with peak of 40,000 circulation. Established re-publishing agreement with the Wall Street Journal's National Business Employment Weekly. Reached directly and indirectly thousands of employers and over 150,000 job-seekers on a regular basis. Also, convened the Working Dinner Series on Active Citizenship for leaders in government, business, the nonprofit sector, and the press/media in cities across America for conversations over dinner on key aspects of what makes for an engaged citizenry in a healthy democracy.
