James is the Head Investment Specialist at Cbus Super, a profit-to-member superannuation fund with assets approaching A$90bn. James represents Cbus’ investment function with a range of internal and external audiences, building and maintaining relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to ensure the investment proposition is communicated clearly to support the growth and strategic aspirations of the Fund.As a senior member of the Investment team, James has responsibility for developing and evolving the narrative of Cbus’ investment portfolio, philosophy and broader investment proposition. He also provides strategic support to the Growth team to expand Cbus’ asset and member base. This role requires James to conduct/coordinate research and reports with Cbus’ Investment Strategy team into emerging domestic and global trends across peer fund models and approaches.

As Head of Equities Portfolio Construction at Cbus Super, James had overall responsibility for the management of ~$40bn in equity mandates across Cbus’ internal and external managers to achieve or exceed the established return targets across the Australian, global and emerging market equity sectors within established risk and fee budgets. As well as having direct responsibility for each of the existing internal equity teams, James also established the strategy for the expansion of Cbus’ internal capabilities from managing around a third of its equities AUM today to a target of over half the AUM over the next five years as the Fund continues to grow through organic growth and mergers with other superannuation funds. James also led Cbus’ Equities Manager Research and Portfolio Construction team, which has responsibility for external equities manager selection and broader equities multi-manager portfolio construction.

As an Investment Director, I would interact closely with Wellington Management’s investment teams and business professionals, driving efforts centered on evaluating the integrity of their approaches and ensuring their services continually met the needs of clients and prospects. I was an integral member of the investment teams with which I worked, and together with the equity portfolio managers evaluated the portfolio characteristics, risk and performance of Wellington's global and regional equity strategies.

As a Senior Portfolio Manager (SPM), James was an ambassador of the investment team, providing a key link between the investment process and delivering peace of mind to clients in regard to their investments by demonstrating broad market knowledge and a focused understanding of the mandate. Role also involved:• approving individual client portfolio optimizations and ensuring that portfolio objectives were not compromised in meeting specific client guidelines; and• exploring/developing new services in the region.As Market Leader and part of leadership team within the Asia-Pacific (ex-Japan) region, I was responsible for the link between Distribution and all SPMs in the region. All three equity SPMs in the region also reported to me (prior to downsizing that I also managed).

Initially, my role was to develop and review IAG’s strategic asset allocation (SAA) to better align it with the Group's investment objectives. I was also responsible for the management and implementation of portfolio protection programs and the tactical asset allocation (TAA) portfolios of IAGAM’s internal (IAG Group) and external clients.In July 2004, my role was broadened to reflect both the increased importance of external managers in IAG’s investment structure and a new priority for IAGAM in 2004/05 to attract more third party mandates. It also demonstrates the strong rapport I had developed with both IAGAM’s internal and external clients. This saw the size of my team double from three to six.
