About James Derham

I am passionate about working with historically oppressed communities, helping to reduce health disparities by addressing social determinants of health. I have worked with a wide range of communities including LGBTQ adults in England, young people of color across the five boroughs of New York City, and LGBTQ+ elders in NYC.As Director for LGBTQ+ Equity at NYC Health + Hospitals, I oversee LGBTQ+ initiatives ensuring the system is LGBTQ+ -affirming for both patients and staff. Based in the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI), I lead a team to develop, coordinate and monitor policies, programs and trainings to promote health equity. At SAGE as Site Director of the nation’s first full time LGBTQ+ senior center, a large community center with over 1500 registered participants, I led a team to provide over 300 pieces of programming per month, and over 27,000 meals annually. This busy center is one of only 16 across NYC classified as a top tier ‘Innovative Senior Center’ and acts as a vital lifeline for older New Yorkers, helping to reduce isolation and build community. In 2012 in England I worked at LGBT Foundation, being promoted twice resulting in a role coordinating the organization’s sexual health team. Through a coalition with three other agencies I launched an HIV self-testing kit project which I presented on as a panel expert at the 2015 HIV Prevention England Conference. In 2016 I moved to NYC, and at Planned Parenthood of New York facilitated over 100 workshops; later supervising a teem of peer educators. A common thread throughout my professional experience is my success leading a team. At LGBT Foundation I launched a ground-breaking online outreach model resulting in the team engaging with over 4000 service users annually. At PPNYC I succeeded in helping the Youth Health Promoters thrive – their opinion pieces were published in various media outlets including Teen Vogue. At SAGE I managed a team in navigating the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, helping older adults stay connected to their communities via a new virtual program portal and outreach phone call project.Outside of work, I have taken part in fundraiser events for Multiple Sclerosis (a disease which my mom had for over 30 years). In October 2020 and 2021 I biked 30 miles and raised over $4000 for ‘Bike MS’, a non-profit which raises money for MS research. I have run the Brooklyn Half Marathon twice and biked 40 miles in the NYC 5 Boro Bike Tour. I am currently learning Spanish, and in my free time love to play piano, go to concerts, and explore New York.
