The goal for my research was to enhance the understanding of environmental effects and contribute to the overarching theoretical framework necessary to engineer quantum devices. Growing in popularity due to their relative simplicity and recent experimental confirmation is the approach to describe open systems using “effective Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians.” In my research, I systematically studied these “Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians” to refine the role of topology and measurements in dissipative systems. I characterized non-Hermitian topological insulators in one and two dimensions using non-traditional methods such as the generalized Brillouin zone and Majorana star representation.

In my engineering position at NSWCDD, I was responsible for topside integration and impact analysis. I completed technical studies to support location decision making for electronic systems onboard naval surface ships. I performed finite element analyses, computational fluid dynamics studies, computational electromagnetics simulations and a variety of other engineering and programmatic tasks. Each type of study required me to grasp the underlying science and a strong understanding of the physics was needed to confirm whether the results were valid.

The goal of the research was to bring the physics of defects in GaN to a new level of understanding, to uncover the microscopic nature of defects, and to solve longstanding problems in the field of semiconductor physics. The research integrated experiment and theory by combining advanced experimental techniques with high performance computing. Working under Dr. Denis Demchenko, my tasking involved performing Hybrid Functional calculations utilizing a mix of Density Functional Theory and Hartree-Fock exchange to calculate formation energies and optical transitions.
