About James Gosnell
The beautiful thing about being a Product Manager is I get to dream about the future. And then build it.For 12 years, I’ve been delivering the future for Genentech’s 120,000+ employees. Some examples of my commercial-grade products have included:-chatbot support/service-in-email virtual assistant-geo-fencing PaaS-indoor wayfinder-ad hoc meeting scheduler-video conferencing tool-executive approval app-employee directory-room iPad marquee-Shuttle schedule appHaving worked closely with customers, I’ve learned that people often seek to do things the easiest way, while companies want things done “right”. That’s why I create products the make the right thing to do, also the easiest thing to do.Most of these products have won over users immediately, due to their intuitive, polished design, and effectiveness in expediting (and eliminating) routine tasks. I’ve often outperformed external apps to win my users, such as with the mapping and scheduling tools.I see myself in the business of fixing problems. If I’ve done my job well enough, I’ve not only saved the user time and headache, I’ve made them feel good about themselves in the process. While I design the future, I work closely with stakeholders to build it. I’ve assembled and led teams of UX designers, engineers, analysts, and testers in coordination with legal, marketing, and sales and support staff to develop and ship 30 products. In addition to this, as the steward of our app store, I defined the product framework, structure, and guidelines behind 1,000 other apps deployed at Genentech.I have put my product knowledge to work in other fields as well. For example, I designed and developed a medical insurance billing app, lauded by hospital administrators for eliminating third-party fees and insurer pushback. Adoption was simple; they just had to use it once and they were sold. When it comes to product design, the best way should be the easy way, and the future is always right around the corner.

Built trusted partnerships with a multitude of stakeholders to deliver, mobile and web applications that support five simultaneous lines of business, enabling the safe, effective and legally compliant inspection of PG&E’s entire transmission power infrastructure.Navigate complex legal, financial, and legacy practices to produce streamlined, compliant products against aggressive timelines and within extremely challenging budgets.Partnered closely with Change Management and Marketing roles to seamlessly pilot, launch and update products.
Sr Product Manager, Platforms & Applications
I oversee the strategy, design, NLP programming, Agile development, launch, adoption, training, and support of enterprise AI-powered chatbots and related APIs on a budget of about $60K per project. My team holds long-term responsibility for the Google Chat and workflow automation back-ends powering these technologies around the world. I direct the efforts of our internal engineering team in Europe, plus international business-unit stakeholders and implementation partners, including Ernst & Young, Accenture, Slalom, and Deloitte.I coordinate the API development for smooth, consistent workflow automation of tasks such as self-serve HR requests, sending notifications, and unlocking accounts for 120K employees.
Product Manager, Platforms & Applications
Unlike many internal teams, we're structured as a 'startup within the enterprise'. I'm accountable for identifying the product/market fit through data analysis, user research and product intuition. I receive seed funding and I'm charged with sustaining our group as a profitable business.Working in close collaboration with our UX Designer, Technical Lead, Infrastructure Operations Group, and key customers, I managed a team of 8 overseas developers to create products from start-to-delivery in 2-3 moths. I won a design-pitch competition, beating out 80 colleagues and receiving seed funding to bring to life Esther, an email-based digital scheduling assistant. Esther made meeting planning more efficient for thousands of staff at our 250 international locations, so we can optimize usage of $16B in common spaces and new construction. Thanks to their speed and intuitive workflow, the 15 popular worker-productivity mobile apps that I project-managed easily outperformed the previous web-based versions by a wide margin.I led development from idea to implementation and ongoing evolution for multiple apps including RoomBoard iPad conference room marquee, a video conferencing tool called DialOne that cut our $14M WebEx fees in half, gApprove, a text-based executive approval app, and Roomeo, a just-in-time conference room booking tool. I created PoC prototypes for an indoor wayfinding app, a geofencing tool built on Google Maps, as well as a tool to assist visiting executives with meeting-space management. I guided the development of over 500 apps globally and built an API manager to allow for swift self-deployment of over 1,000 iOS apps, driving 10x growth in 3 years. To increase adoption, I produced irreverent viral campaigns including videos, gifs, and social media posts.
Product Manager / Business Analyst, Mobile Apps
Reporting directly to the Global Head of IT, I drove the company’s transition from web-based intranet tools to commercial-grade mobile apps. I took the lead on building products from concept to completion, including facilitating bug fixes and upgrades. The refined, user-centered apps received widespread adoption by WOM within 48 hours. Prior to the Roche acquisition, I took the helm of our in-house app store, which staged and updated almost 100 mobile apps utilized by 12,000 employees nationwide. I researched workflows and spoke directly with stakeholders to pinpoint and develop 12 native iOS apps, inspiring a development boom resulting in 180 apps built in 9 months. My apps were some of the most popular, including employee lookup app Peeps, BART/bus schedule app aRide which competed with external commercial apps, and campus directory SiteExplorer, built on Google Maps and powered by a polished CMS.
Test Lab Manager, Software & Desktop
I developed and executed automated and manual regression tests on OS and iOS updates. Working on the enterprise level, I was soon recognized as the go-to specialist for Mac apps, leading to added responsibility for conceptualizing products.
Head Of Product / Co-Founder
I was able to identify a marketplace gap for an in-house hospital procedure coding and billing app which could massively reduce third-party fees, compliance risk, and human error. To build an iOS app, I sourced and managed a lead interaction designer and a team of engineers, producing an app that was highly secure, scalable, and easy to use. Collaborating with billing companies and physicians, I developed expertise in the regulatory side of healthcare, including insurance claim handling, CPT/ICO coding guidelines, and HIPAA. Using that knowledge, I led my team to create and deliver the Kodiak medical billing application, running a pilot in St. Mary’s Medical Center’s ER, Long-Term Care, and Critical Care departments. Our app eliminated 13% of third-party billing commission fees, reduced bill submission time by 80%, and reduced insurer rejections by 65%.
Test Engineer
In order to measure and improve application performance, I conceptualized and executed a total overhaul of stress tests. I played a critical role in toughening database and application security through deft project redesign.
Technical Marketing Engineer, Voip Developer Partnership
I managed sales-based relationships with partners interested in creating products on Cisco technology, offering hardware and software support to speed up product development.
