About James Grant

James is dual qualified in pharmacy and information technology and works within Queensland Health on their digital health systems and deriving analytical insights from their larger scale clinical information systems; including being co-founder of Queensland Health’s Clinical Decision Support Working Group. He has long associations with the Australian Digital Health Agency, Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, Australasian Institute of Digital Healthcare and the Society of Hospital Pharmacists Australia; including being the inaugural Chair of their electronic medications management and pharmacy informatics speciality practice group. James’ work in clinical decision support leverages human factors and ergonomics considerations when rationalising digital decision support for clinicians and his recent postgraduate studies in translational research have led to reading and synthesising a large number of articles and analyses on the effectiveness of alerts and related interventions in drawing a person’s attention to the right details at the right time in the right place. Queensland Health is transitioning to a standard pre/post assessment of any major change in their electronic health record and James and his team routinely extract data and undertake analysis to monitor the impacts and uptake of new, changed and removed system elements. James continues to work clinically in hospital pharmacy and often provides informal and formal education and training on the use of clinical information systems to healthcare staff as well as hearing directly from clinicians what they value and what they don’t in the systems in use. James has been professionally recognised by several of his professional bodies having been awarded fellowships from the Society of Hospital Pharmacists Australia for undertaking nationally impactful work for pharmacists and hospitals, from the Australasian Institute of Digital Health for meaningful and nationally impactful work in eHealth, and the Australian and New Zealand College of Advanced Pharmacy for contributions to pharmacy informatics.
