Lead Programmer, Tse Project
The Phillips & Drew Division of UBS (Union Bank of Switzerland), a brokerage and asset management firm, had just been awarded a seat on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. I was selected as a member of the multinational software development team they assembled to create custom software to facilitate their trading activities, maintain transaction history, and automate the daily arbitrage process. This presented particular challenges, since Japan's "Syushin-Koyō" or lifetime-employment, made it necessary for us to specifically NOT replace the guy in the basement of the TSE who's job it was to feed rolls of punch tape (ticker tape) from the teletype, into the tape reader, as part of the arbitrage process. I believe the TSE is more modern these days, but that's the way it was, still, in 1987. Long story short, the project was terminated after 6 months upon UBS signing a deal to purchase trading software that had been developed by another broker, which already did 90% of what was needed.
