One of the most amazing things I have witnessed was during my 20-year Air Force career happened at White Sands, New Mexico. After months of overseeing the development of a software defined radio (SDR) for cubesats, my team from the Air Force Research Lab was ready for experimentation. The SDR was one of the payloads aboard a sub-orbital rocket. The goal of the experiment was to demonstrate that the SDR, despite its compact size and the spinning of the rocket, provided the power to close a link with NASA's geosynchronous Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS) constellation system. The countdown for the rocket was short and then within seconds it rose scores of miles above us. Throughout the flight our SDR transmitted its signal to TDRS. The experiment was a resounding success.My career has afforded me the opportunity to provide warfighter with assessments about adversary Air Forces, drive the advancement the technology critical for affordable and responsive space, advocate for disruptive technologies like plug-and-play satellites and commercially hosted government payloads, and work with people dedicated to maintaining the freedoms we all love.
