The team also built a WhatsApp-native user experience for CTWA, which simultaneously improved transparency, created a better consumer experience, and gave businesses visibility into which ads were effective.

I hired the team and built the ads integration into WhatsApp Status in half the budgeted time. The product faced a number of legal and regulatory challenges. Advertising in WhatsApp was put on hold in favor of paid messaging, but you can create an ad on Instagram and Facebook that creates a thread in WhatsApp's business messaging products (aka ads that "click to WhatsApp," CTWA).

I joined as an individual contributor during a time of transition. WhatsApp had just announced 1B daily active users, the pre-acquisition team had started to leave, and WhatsApp's media was still hosted on IBM's SoftLayer. Traffic was growing 3-5x per year so leveraging FBCDN was critical. I hired and managed the Media infrastructure team. We migrated to Facebook infrastructure, stabilized distributed systems, built a tiny TLS1.3 library, and scaled traffic despite technical challenges in CDN targeting for an end-to-end encrypted platform.

Tech Lead In Core Storage / Cloud Infrastructure
Started and led several projects. Wrote a ubiquitous library to annotate requests as they flow through the system, for cross-stack performance measurement, monitoring, alerting, and analysis (10^m nodes collecting from 10^n servers), predecessor to OpenTelemetry. E.g., answers, "what is my CPU impact several layers down the stack,” and “which layer of the stack adds the most latency?" Shipped large-scale distributed systems with nanosecond-scale latency requirements. Waged "war on cache misses." Designed and implemented novel locking primitive that avoids most memory barriers. Got a chance to hack on a lot of systems, including Spanner, Chubby, Bigtable, MapReduce, Gmail, search, social, grpc...
