About James Shields

My name is James Shields, I am currently a graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania studying Computer Science and Information Technology.I have a background in the Aerospace industry, having graduated Magna Cum Laude with Honors in December of 2022 with a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering with an Aerospace Concentration from the University of Dayton.After completing my Bachelors Degree, I joined GE Aerospace's renowned Edison Engineering Development Program, and worked as a Software and Controls Engineer on the RISE program. After just over a year of work, I decided to resign from my position, and pursue my passions in the fields of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. I believe we're on the precipice of a revolution through AI, and I want to be a part of it; hoping to make the future a happier, safer, and more equitable place for all.When I am not working or studying I am an avid LEGO fan, film watcher, gamer, martial artist, volleyball player, and reader.

These projects are detailed below.- Worked to complete project that would examine 3D CMM scanner usage for verifying thickness of electroformed parts, thus eliminating previously used verification method that is extremely time consuming- Transferred brick sizing tool code from VBA to MATLAB by changing syntax to new programming language, and creating looping system to run several thousand iterations of brick cooler geometry and output optimized results based on pre-selected inputs- Examined, troubleshooted, fixed, and tested rig that would be utilized to rapidly stabilize SMA springs, after rig was back to cycling autonomously, wrote work instructions for operator use- Interpreted surface cooler fin test data and inputted results into newly created surface cooler catalog that can be utilized to select surface cooler fin geometry for new designs

These projects are detailed below.- Designed and had new rotor holding fixture manufactured to keep F-18 rotors upright while being baked in ovens to replace old fixture that caused damage to rotor shaft and tubes saving $59,013.20 in cost avoidance- Manufactured shadow boards using 5S and Lean methods to replace toolboxes and old fixtures thus reducing production time and creating uniform workspaces saving $25,055.93 in cost avoidance- Created charts to track work output, safety, quality, and shipping efficiency and implemented them in individual team cells to create operator run CCC meetings each morning- Used foams and plastics to manufacture electronic part holder to be used when moving GCU components across the shop floor reducing unpackaging time and eliminating circuit short possibilities saving $25,545.00 in cost avoidance and creating open floor space previously taken up by GCU inventory - Worked with a team to perform RCCA (Root Cause Corrective Action) investigation of rotor and stator defects, performed scoring of possible causes, and implemented solutions to prevent future problems- Modified inserts used to transport rotors to outside company for balancing by adding foam cutouts to hold rotor end caps that were consistently causing damage to rotor shaft saving $108,000.00 in cost avoidance
