In the software world, presales technical questions are handled by someone with the title of SC or SE. Depending on who you speak with, the "S" refers to Sales, Solution, or System, the "C" refers to Consultant, and the "E" refers to Engineer. Regardless of title, a successful SE or SC must be both technically savvy and socially confident. From a Sales perspective, the SE/SC should be able to present high-level information to executives as well as getting "into the technical weeds" with engineers and developers. They must be able to demonstrate key features of software to end users, power users and administrators. Since they interact with all of these groups during the sales cycle, they must understand the appropriate level to respond to a question based on the audience.From a Solution or System perspective, it is important that the SE/SC understand the overall problem that the customer is trying to solve and how his software solution can address some or all of the problems. He should also be able to determine if his solution has gaps that need to be addressed for a successful implementation in the clients environment.
