Member of a late stage drug discovery group focused on neurodegeneration and targeting mechanisms related to Alzheimer's disease. My current work focuses on investigating cellular trafficking defects within neurons related to Alzheimer's disease. This work utilizes neurons generated from patient derived induced pluripotent stem cell from patients with and without familial linked Alzheimer's disease, which allows for translational investigation across clinical human, mouse and new stem cell models to identify novel targets for pharmacological interventions.

The core facility contains 15 microscopes, a tissue culture facility, data analysis space and serves 40 out of the 50 Salk research labs, as well as UCSD, Scripps, Sanford Burnham, and several San Diego biotechnology firms ranging across fields focused on cancer, diabetes, cellular aging, metabolism, neurobiology and regenerative medicine. Area of research is Cellular & Molecular Biology: The focus of my thesis project was to examine the roles of kinases in the regulation of mitosis/cancer and characterize/delineated new regulatory mechanisms of action for kinases Aurora B, MPS-1, and PLK-1. This cross-disciplinary (Notre Dame Biochemistry Department) and international collaboration research required the development of in vivo/in vitro through-put screening assays to investigated the role of kinases in kinetochore organization and the subsequent impact on cell division. Specifically, the work identified/mapped multiple novel substrates and characterized the in vivo/in vitro importance of phosphorylation for cell division. In addition, this research revealed unique and novel insights into the mechanisms of action of the cancer therapeutic drugs studied and provided researchers with new drug targets for cancer therapies.

I created a interactive tutorial website and instructional videos to effectively teach Molecular and Cellular Biology Laboratory techniques ( www.notredamescience.com ). The website provides supplemental online material for laboratory techniques in the form of an interactive tutorials with instructional videos, online quizzes, and a question-and-answer forum. I worked with the professor of the course and with student input to tailor the beta revision to fit the needs of the course.In 2009, the website won the the Four Horsemen Idea Competition.In 2010, received funding from the Notre Dame College of Science for expansion and adding of additional videos.
