James Kocis, technologist, author, entrepreneur and investor, founded Burgiss, a global, market-leading provider of data and analytical solutions for investors in 1987 and continued as its CEO, overseeing its strategic direction and operations until purchased by MSCI in October of 2023.He is Managing Partner of Hudson Street Ventures, and Chairman of Bipysync, a fintech company.An early adherent to specialty database development, Jim began his involvement in private equity in the late 80′s as an independent consultant to Mitchell-Hutchins, a division of PaineWebber, where he and his team built one of the first relational database systems designed to help institutional investors manage private equity assets. With this engagement, Jim had the good fortune to be advised by Tom Judge of AT&T Investment Management, one of the legends of the early days of private capital investing.A graduate of the New Jersey Institute of Technology with a degree in Chemical Engineering and Distinction in Humanistic Studies, Jim is the author (with Alan Zenreich) of The Paradox Programmer’s Guide: PAL by Example (Random House 1993); and Inside Private Equity: The Professional Investor’s Handbook (Wiley 2009) with James Bachman, Austin Long, and Craig Nickels. Jim began his career project managing the master planning of DeKorte State Park while working for the Hackensack Meadowlands Development Commission under Chet Mattson.He resides in Hoboken, New Jersey.
