James L. Crowley holds the post of Professor at the Institut Polytechnique de Grenoble (INPG), where he teaches courses in Computer Vision, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence at l'ENSIMAG. He directs the Inria Joint Research Team Pervasive at the Inria Grenoble Rhone Alpes Research center. He has recently been named to the Chair on Collaborative Intelligent Systems as the Univ Grenoble Alpes MIAI Multidisciplinary AI Institute. Professor Crowley has edited two books, five special issues of journals, and authored over 300 peer reviewed articles. Over the last 30 years, professeur Crowley has made fundamental contributions to computer vision, mobile robotics and human-computer interaction. These include early innovations in multi-resolution and multi-scale computer vision, position estimation, perception and navigation for mobile robots, architecture for autonomous systems, multi-sensor fusion, robust tracking for observing human activity, appearance-based techniques for object recognition and navigation, and observation and modeling of human activity for context aware environments. His papers have received more than 14,500 Citations with an h-index of 58. His current research combines multi-modal perception with cognitive modeling to explore new forms of Interaction with intelligent systems.In Sept. 2011, James Crowley was appointed as Senior Member of the l'Institut Universitaire de France (IUF).In Mar. 2014, James Crowley was named Chevalier de l'Ordre National du Mérite. In Oct 2018 James Crowley received the ICMI Award for Sustained Contribution In 2008, Professor Crowley oversaw the creation of the Master of Science in Informatics at Grenoble (MoSIG). The MoSIG program offers a 2 year, European Standard, English-language, Master of Science with specialisations in Graphics-Vision-Robotics, AI and the Web, Ubiquitous Interactive Systems, Parallel Distributed Systems, Software Engineering, and High Performance Embedded Systems. From 1994 to 1998, Prof. Crowley served as coordinator of the European Computer Vision Network (ECVnet), the EC "Network of Excellence" in Computer Vision. From 1993 to 2001, Professor Crowley coordinated the marie-Curie networks SMART and SMART II whose subject was the development of techniques for surveillance and monitoring. He has served as the technical coordinator of project ESPRIT basic research project BRA 3038/EP 7108, "Vision as Process" from 1989 to 1995. He has participated in a total of 14 European Projects since 1986 including the early FP II project P940 "Depth and Motion Analysis".
