I am a professor of history at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse. My first research project focused on the rise of local environmental organizing in the United States and Pittsburgh in the 1960s and 1970s. I have published a history of city bicycling in America, Bike Battles: A History of Sharing the American Road (Seattle: University of Washington Press: 2015) in translation as Las Batallas de la Bici (Katakrak Press, 2019). It examines the political, legal and physical legacies of urban history which make it difficult to ride in the present. More recently, I have turned to a research project on the history of urban parking.Specialties: While I am broadly trained in U.S. social and cultural history, I have special interest in social movements, urban history, civil society and environmental politics. I currently teach U.S. and world history survey courses and advanced courses in modern U.S. and environmental history. I've also taught political science, urban studies, and public policy courses.
