James a decade of experience in public policy and researching the intersection of information, technology and power. He is currently a PhD candidate with the School of International Studies and the Department of Media Studies at Stockholm University in Sweden working on a dissertation focusing on human and civil rights in the digital domain and public policy advocacy. Previously he has been an affiliate at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University, a visiting scholar at the University of Pennsylvania's Center for Global Communication Studies at the Annenberg School for Communication, and an affiliate at the Internet Policy Observatory. In 2014 James was a Google Policy Fellow with the Global Network Initiative and a Consortium on Media Policy Studies fellow. From 2009 to 2013 he was a policy analyst and fellow for the Open Technology Inistitue at New America where he focused on communications policies related to human rights.James holds an Mssc. from Uppsala University in Sweden, where he researched civil society involvement in information policy and the European ACTA debate, and a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of California at Berkeley. His work has been published in Advances in Computing, Ars Technica, CommLaw Conspectus, Communication and the Public, IEEE Internet Computing, IEEE Spectrum, International Journal of Communication, Slate, the Journal for Information Policy, the Journal of Peer Production, and University Southern California Annenberg Press. In addition to his work in public policy and academia, James plays drums, banjo, and guitar and is a photographer.
