I love finding and delivering value in environmental data, in a way that's profitable for data users, and for the earth.As a kid who spent a lot of time on the water, I was intrigued by the wind, and later by the weather that drove it. I would make my own forecasts of the "Southerly Buster" weather events in Sydney. I built my first weather website on Geocities in the late 90s on a dialup internet connection.Studying meteorology and beginning to work as a forecaster, I realised that data science, product and sales were of more interest to me than operational forecasting and shift work - I wanted to make something of sustained value. The first time I created a product was in 2008 as an employee at Weatherzone, - called “Opticast” it was a consensus forecasting system that made hourly forecasts in Australia about 20% more accurate. It had no customers, so I went and sold it to dozens of companies. Working as an executive in the weather industry, I worked for about 10 years across sales, product and R&D. I invested in learning about leadership, sales, product management and strategy. I did an Exec MBA at AGSM in Sydney. I grew revenues by millions, by creating significantly more value for customers by solving their weather problems and capitalising on their weather opportunities.In 2016 Dr Nick Engerer and I started Solcast, with a mission to enable those building the solar-powered future. It started as a side project, but it was growing so quickly that we had to quit our jobs. By early 2021, the company was the world's leading provider of solar irradiance data, and the Solcast API had over 14,000 users globally. Solcast tracks almost every cloud in the world every 5 or 10 minutes (outside polar regions, and aside from tiny <1km clouds!!), and we produce about a billion "estimated actuals" and forecasts of solar irradiance and solar power every hour. This is all delivered in a freemium web API, which allows users to explore and play with the data before subscribing.
