In 2017, James organized a joint EPRI-OpenADR workshop on DER Communication Standards. The workshop was attended by 80+ industry experts in communications protocols and DER management and produced major reports on DER Messaging Use Cases and standards for DER messaging.At DistribuTech in 2018 and 2019 and at IEEE T&D in 2018, James teamed up with Triangle Microworks and Subnet to develop and present a DER Communications Workshop. This is a one-of-a-kind workshop that walks participants through the basics of messaging for DER management and the selection of protocols for specific applications. Other contributions to the industry include:- Membership in the GridWise Architecture Council and originator of its Transactive Energy Conference which just completed its 6th annual session in 2019.- One of the Founders and early Board member for Smart Grid Oregon which became Smart Grid Northwest and is now Grid Forward (https://smartgridnw.org/). - Active participant in the California Smart Inverter Working Group where he has influenced CA Rule 21 policy.James was an original member of the SGIP Test and Certification Committee (TCC) and led the TCC Work Group that is assessing the state of certification and test programs for standards in the SGIP Catalog of Standards. James has been an Adjunct Professor at Portland State University, co-teaching a graduate course titled Smart Grid for Sustainable Communities. From 2001 to October, 2008, James oversaw the company as President and CEO. In 2009 James led the company into the Smart Energy area through the award of an ARRA 5-year cost-share grant. This introduced QualityLogic into the Smart Energy business and the company quickly became the leader in providing test tools and services to the industry, focusing on grid edge applications such as Demand Response and DER integration.
Started the company as Revision Labs in 1994; merged with Genoa Technologies and GenRev (joint venture of Genoa and Revision Labs) in 1999. In 2000, James led the merger with QualityLogic and became president & CEO of the company.
