This career development grant, part of the European Union 6th Framework Program, is awarded to scientists who have shown an ability to carry out independent research early in their careers. This was awarded to carry out a large scale study of complexity in solar active region and predicting solar flares. The award specifically encourages career development by allowing the research fellow to carry out whatever teaching and administration duties they wish to partake of. I have used this opportunity to teach a number of undergraduate courses in electromagnetism, foundation physics, and computational skills. I also organise and teach postgraduate classes in plasma physics and image processing for astrophysicists. In addition I teach a series of evening classes for Astronomy Ireland.
  • Nasa Goddard Space Flight Center
    Stereo Scientist
Nasa Goddard Space Flight Center Mar 2006 - Nov 2007
As support scientist for the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) I was primarily involved in researching the breakthrough science results from this innovative mission. For the first time in solar physics, we can could observe from off the Sun-earth line and finally reconstruct the solar atmosphere fully in three spatial dimensions. In additional to carrying out fundamental science, I was in charge of science coordination and starting the STEREO Science Center. This included organising and running weekly team meeting between scientists, programmers and engineers to discuss science goals, data and software. I also visited several institutions in USA and Europe where I taught the science goals and manipulation of STEREO data in 3D to both academic staff and post graduate students. As a member of this team I was received a prestigious NASA group achievement award, and in 2008 STEREO was ranked first overall in the ranking of NASA solar missions.
  • Nasa Goddard Space Flight Center
Nasa Research Associate, Oak Ridge Associated Universities Associate
Nasa Goddard Space Flight Center Mar 2004 - Mar 2006
As a successful principal investigator of this highly competitive grant, I carried out independent research on predicting solar flares and studying X-ray emission from solar flares. I was a integral team member of several solar missions, including RHESSI and SoHO. In the field of space weather I started my ongoing position as a Max MIllennium Chief Observer, and Solarmonitor.org web curator, and started a successful summer internship program for Irish students at NASA.

    Leverhulme Trust Postdoctoral Research Fellow
    Queen'S University Belfast Sep 2003 - Feb 2004
As part of the successful Solar Eclipse Coronal Imaging System (SECIS) grant I studied high cadence coronal images of the sun observed at the total solar eclipse in Zambia, 2001. This project contained a large public outreach component, teaching the relevant solar physics to the Zambian undergraduate students. I instigated a successful ground based solar observing project and QUB and continue to collaborate on these projects as a visiting fellow.
