Profile bio

About Dr. James Michael Nolan

I am a Psychologist/Counselor/Psychotherapist, and Life Coach, with a Psychology practice in the Hawaiian Islands and New Mexico, as well as a coaching practice (including online), all around the world, and occasionally beyond. You know, being President of a graduate school (Southwestern College in Santa Fe) for almost thirteen years, while a great and formative experience in more ways than I can tell you, also pulled me far afield from what brought me to Psychology as my chosen field. Higher Ed is Higher Ed, a field drowning in oceans of accreditation insanity, drifting further and further away from the Vision upon which our school and many others were founded. I am profoundly appreciative to have had the experience, and more so to be out of it. I am at core, a servant, a helper, a Coach, a Therapist. (Actually, I am a guitar player and wish I played center field for the Yankees, but next to that...)Here's what I do with clients:Our relationship is authentic, intimate, keeping both the deep and the mundane levels of your life in clear focus, as we move you closer to the experience you envision for yourself. I should tell you I have a maverick's perspective on life--not big on rules and that sort of thing. I am an INFP, and I find the Law of Attraction material with Abraham-Hicks very useful in my life and work. I believe that if we recognize our responsibility for things getting where they have gotten, we can also see the flip side--we have the power to move them to another place. To a very significant extent, we create our own reality. That is my belief...Many of my clients have paranormal, metaphysical, spiritual, mystical experiences. That's just how it has gone. I am very oriented toward the metaphysical, always have been, so perhaps that explains it in part. At almost 70, I no longer spend any time worrying about rules, dogma, restricting and confining "ways of knowing" preferred by the power brokers of our culture. I live life on my own terms, and seem to draw people who are looking to create that in their own lives. Come visit my web site:http://drjamesmichaelnolan.com/ Prior to that, I held positions as Director of Training for Walden University, Director of Health & Counseling Services at Baldwin-Wallace College, Staff Psychologist for the University of Texas at Austin, among many other university positions.Truck docks, factories, the unemployment line, and the "business world" are not unknown to me. I was born and raised in Cleveland proper, West Park. Not exactly entitled.

Listed skills include Career Counseling, Psychology, Psychotherapy, Teaching, and 46 others.

When you truly open yourself up to life's possibilities, the universe delivers, often in ways you would never have imagined. I maintain practices in both New Mexico and Hawai'i, and I am coaching people all over the world. It's pretty cool. If you are looking for more in your life, or something different, or more fulfilling, or more adventure, or personal transformation, You really should talk to somebody, whether it's me or somebody else. In Hawai'i, I take HMSA, HMA, UHA, CIGNA, AKAIMI, UHC, VA and other insurances...In New Mexico, I take BC/BS, Presbyterian/Magellan, True Health New Mexico, Western Skies, all Medicaid, Medicare, and some others. I work best with those who want to live more of their life by their own rules, and who think outside the cultural paradigms we were all given. I am focused on the Positive, on Growth, on Possibilities. I am for taking personal responsibility for/in one's life, and I endorse the Principle of Attraction. (You don't find that much in the field of psychology, which I find wildly unfortunate.)For more information, please visit my web site and take a look around. I am not considered a very mainstream "therapist", and I will bring coaching, humor, and optimism into our work together. A nine-iron shot past 71, I am really looking to spend more time walking down Waikiki, or swimming in the ocean, taking photos at Halona Beach Cove and Sandy Beach. I am learning to play a little lead guitar to go with my 50 years of singer/songwriter stuff. I love it. Learning to record too. I don't really need to work as much these days, and I really ONLY want to work with people who are a good match, and who are ready to steer their lives into the sun. If that's you, I'd love to hear from you...http://drjamesmichaelnolan.com/ Spotify: James Mick

Dec 2015 - Present

Instructor

Numerous Universities

I have taught online and on the ground for many years. I call for students to allow for the awakening their Inner Teacher. I want them to explore, discover and/or create their own truth, both professionally and personally. Students respond enthusiastically to my approach, as it is authentic, disruptive to outdated modes of pursuing self-knowledge, and it is entertaining. I have primarily taught in doctoral level Psychology programs, and in master's level Counseling programs. I have taught at Ohio State, the University of Texas, the University of California at Santa Barbara, Southwestern College, Walden, Capella, South University, Argosy University and others.

Jan 1985 - Nov 2018

President

Us

I never intended to be a “leader.” I am not an "Alpha Guy", nor have I ever aspired to be-that is not how I am made. But leadership was a natural destination--others saw qualities in me that would help move their organizations or lives ahead, and that was that. I never really was an "academic type" either, but I served in that world for a long time. I am extremely happy to be out of it, to be honest. I am not a traditional leader. I don't need to lead--I only agree to do so when it makes sense. When that is the case, I lead boldly, and am willing to set new courses with optimism, positive thinking, and lots of collaboration and consultation. (Beware those who HAVE to be Alpha or Leaders. Discover their motives. They are often unclean...)I am always more than happy to serve a leader who has a Vision that out-reaches mine...Leadership is not characterological, it is situational...I have a lot of energy, a fact which is noted favorably everywhere I have worked. I am no stranger to, nor am I afraid of, change. I aspire, always, toward the Visionary. In this era, not changing is not an option. It becomes a matter of going there kicking and screaming or leading the charge, and I choose the latter. It has worked out for me, time after time.

Jun 2006 - Oct 2018

Director Of Training, School Of Psychology

Walden University

My job was to coordinate Practicum and Internship experiences of all students in the School of Psychology, all over the United States and Canada. I visited training sites and supervised the students' overall experiences, making sure they were worthy of the title "internship." I taught many different courses for Walden during my time, and also provided intensive training at many "face to face", on the ground residencies (I think people unfamiliar with Distance Learning do not know that Walden and Capella do this kind of thing, and do it often.) I sat on many dissertation committees, and prided myself on being the best online instructor I knew. I just enjoyed that kind of environment a lot, and would be open to opportunities to teach more online in the future.

2002 - 2006 ~4 yrs

Director Of Health & Counseling Services

Berea, Ohio, Us

Director of Health and Counseling Services. I supervised a medical staff of physicians and nurses, as well as the mental health services. I set and managed the budget, provided direct service and supervised much clinical work in the Counseling Services area. I served on many college committees, and was a leader in the Student Affairs Division. I served as instructor, mentor, and consultant to various college divisions and departments.

1996 - 2005 ~9 yrs

Distance Learning Instructor

Argosy University

I taught Career Counseling for about 4 years for Argosy Chicago, and once for Argosy, Atlanta online. It was a great experience and I wish they had kept that course online, because I enjoyed teaching it. As some distance learning experiences go, I never met one person from Argosy face to face--the entire relationship and experience was from a distance.

Jan 2000 - Jan 2004

Subject Matter Expert And Instructor

South University

When South University needed a Developmental Psychology course, they hired me as the SME (Subject Matter Expert) to work with a team of Instructional Design people in India, with whom I worked long distance to create the course. Later, I taught the course for a year or so. Great experience working with a team in India--my first direct experience with the Global Market Place....

Jan 2000 - Jan 2002

Staff Psychologist

Austin, Tx, Us

Staff Psychologist, supervisor of Psychology Interns, Social Work Interns, Psychiatric Residents; taught courses in the schools of Psychology and Education. Offered individual and group psythotherapy and Positive Psychology-based workshops (though Positive Psychology, as a "field", did not exist at that time.)Administrative responsibilities as required in the Counseling and Mental Health Services agency.

Aug 1992 - Aug 1996

Manufacturers Representative

R.L. English Company

Manufacturers Representative in the Steel Products industry, primarily fasteners. Worked with roughly 30 companies over those years, many domestic manufacturers and many importers from all over the world. Territory was largely in the Central to Southern Ohio area, West Virginia, and Central and Northern Kentucky.

Jan 1976 - Jun 1986

Glove Turner

Asbestos Products

Long before they knew about asbestos, I was a glove turner in an asbestos factory...We would leave at the end of a shift with asbestos fibers so thick it made my teenage mustache turn white...Back then, I would do ANYTHING for work. I just wanted the opportunity to work...

1972 - 1973 ~1 yr

Tow Motor/Truck Dock Guy

West Side Storage

At this, and other jobs, I worked on truck docks, driving tow motor trucks, as well as old fashioned hand loading of trucks hour after hour, day after day. It was pivotal in my life--a classic case of "I know for sure what I do not want to do..." I headed back to college at the next opportunity...

1971 - 1972 ~1 yr

Dryer Room Guy

Phoenix Dye Works

When you dye large balls of yarn, they have to be dried in metal ovens that burn you, cut your hands, and provide all manner of other dangers all day, every day. It was only the fact that I was making a cool $2.50 an hour and got some OT that made this a worthwhile job which allowed me to buy The White Album, Cherry Cigars, and other necessities of a 16 year old.
