I am a poet, storyteller, teacher, and manuscript coach. I hold an MFA in Writing from the Vermont College of Fine Arts. Having memorized over 600 poems and developed a unique background in poetic storytelling, I’ve performed shows and taught writing, creativity, and public speaking worldwide. My latest work, 100 Days: A Poetic Memoir After Cancer, was published by 3: A Taos Press in May 2023. In addition, I have co-authored two Imaginative Storm books on writing: How to Read for an Audience and Write What You Don't Know: Ten Steps to Writing with Confidence, Energy, and Flow.Through The Imaginative Storm Writing Project, my creative collaborator, Allegra Huston, and I have crafted a unique approach to coaching writers at all levels. The Imaginative Storm Project aims to help writers build their writing confidence and produce dynamic written material that will surprise and delight their readers for years to come.I co-founded The Artist's Way Creativity Camp with Julia Cameron, the author of the popular book on creativity, The Artist's Way. I’ve had over 20 years of experience teaching creativity courses based on The Artist's Way. Julia Cameron says, "James Navé and I have worked together for over 20 years. He has a quick, curious, and searching mind, plus a humanist eye for poetic detail. Founder Of The Imaginative Storm Writing ProjectImaginative Storm Writer Training Jan 2014 - PresentIn the early 90s, during my national poetry performance tours for students, I established The Imaginative Storm Writing Project. This initiative has since been embraced by thousands of educators and writers, revolutionizing the way they approach creative writing. Alongside my creative partner, Allegra Huston, we've broadened the scope of Imaginative Storm Writing. Our expansion includes publishing books, offering online courses, and conducting interactive workshops. What follows will give you an idea of how the Imaginative Storm approach works. If you want to run a race, you don’t just get up off the couch and start running. You train. Same with writing. If you’ve ever tried to write something “real” straight out of the gate, you get what we mean.Think of your imagination as a muscle. The more you work it, the stronger and stretchier it gets. The great thing is, no pain! No groaning and burning! Just play and exploration and surprise.Use our prompts as a gym for your writing muscles, or use them to open a window into a scene or a character. It’s a great strategy for getting your imagination to give you the gifts that you can’t just “think up” with your rational mind. The more you write to Imaginative Storm prompts, the stronger and stretchier your imagination becomes—and the freer and fresher and more authentic all your writing becomes. Try it and see! -

Co-Founder And Program DirectorPoetry Alive! Jan 1984 - Dec 1991The inception of Poetry Alive! traces back to 1981, at the National Storytelling Festival in Tennessee, where the idea of narrating traditional poems as stories first struck me. In collaboration with Bob Falls, we initiated a new wave of poetry storytelling, inviting teachers to choose poems for us to theatrically perform in school assemblies and follow-up workshops. This innovative approach led to the formation of a fully-fledged theater company, captivating over 500,000 students yearly. My journey with this groundbreaking initiative concluded in 1991, but Poetry Alive! continued to spread the joy of spoken word poetry, impacting at least 5 million students until its closure in 2016
