Possibly one of the most culturally and educationally enriching experiences I have ever had in my life was having the opportunity to collaborate internationally with students and faculty from the University of Rhode Island and El Servicio Nacional de Apredndizaje (SENA), Colombia, to develop four prototype, myoelectric, 3D-printed, low-cost prosthetic arms for amputee patients in Barranquilla, Colombia. We were able to share design ideas through virtual teamwork and meet the patients via international Skype calls. In June of 2017, the students from SENA and us students from URI took part in an onsite designathon in the US, and further developed our prototypes and participated in patient-engaged design in Colombia during August of 2017.The ability to work with a team on the intercultural and global scale to create a tool that can change the quality of life of another for the better is a concept that is truly powerful to me. Having tasted the challenges that exist in the realm of Design Thinking and our capacity to empower others utilizing technology, I know that my passion lies here.
  • Lna Laser Technology
    Engineering Intern
Lna Laser Technology May 2017 - Aug 2017
The team of engineers I worked with at LNA Laser Technologies helped me to gain a reinforced understanding of automated laser engraving processes utilizing FANUC robotic systems, the construction and installation of laser engraving units, and product design with respect to customer service. Here, I had the opportunity to develop the first version of a customer database application using Visual Basic .NET that populates a pdf report with specific engraving designs requested by a customer. The idea behind the application included receiving a desired design from a customer, realizing the design utilizing company laser engraving systems, and reporting out the recorded measurements to the customer, with the goal of further automating this process. In addition, I helped to assemble, install software on, and test company laser engraving units to be shipped to customers around the US for installation.
