About James Olson
More than 25 years of assembling and running distributed international teams. I've been responsible for leading large multi-level organizations inside large companies to small teams at startups to being an individual contributor that merely showed some other teams some new stuff. I've found a rewarding sense of accomplishment in all of them. If you want someone to manage a large department with hundreds of people and many mangers I can do that. If you want someone to lead a small team of PhDs doing R/D I can do that too. If you want someone to be a worker bee and create or implement something new I love doing that. It really depends on the motivation generated by the end goal. Here are some areas that I've had lots of experience in:Public and private clouds - Having flexible and scalable systems is key to being innovative.Automation and orchestration systems - Whether that's in leveraging public cloud or traditional data centers, software development or operations. What it comes down to is improving efficiency and limiting risk.Monitoring - This is important obviously in production operations but equally so in development and deployment.
Listed skills include Iis, Cloud Computing, Windows Server, Vmware, and 44 others.

Head Of Special Projects
Sr. Manager Devops Engineering
Currently filling two major roles in the company. I'm serving as the Cloud Architect as well as managing the Engineering Services team. The Engineering Services team supports our development teams. We provide tools to enable automatic capturing of evidence for audit and compliance reporting, to deploy secure code efficiently and self-service for the dev teams. We bridge the knowledge gap between developers and operations. We push the cloud, automation and the latest and greatest tech. I run my team like a startup inside the company, fast moving, agile but it's a startup run by grownups. While the need to quickly adapt and move fast is important we still recognize that we need to build things that can be used for a long time and expanded on. I've been able to do this by pushing automation everywhere.
Internal Solutions Architect
I went to nGenx after much pleading as it was a sister company to nivio. I helped evaluate and design solutions to some internal problems and offerings. I brought my public cloud expertise to help them quickly see what would be useful and what would need to be changed. There were things that public cloud offerings weren't the best fit though so for those I help them bring up some better internal tools and services to add a bit more resiliency and a few killer features.
Senior System Engineer
At TuneIn we used a vast array of modern technology to provide a stable yet adaptable systems. I was responsible for reverse engineering the legacy implementation of our code base and making it reproducible using Chef as the configuration management system and partly as the deployment system as well. We were able to then use these cookbooks to provide a consistent installation during a full data center migration.I also worked on some offerings that were completely in the AWS cloud and providing a path to scale into the cloud when needed. It's setup now that AWS can be thought of as just another DC location and not something completely foreign. Finally the other major portion of my contribution has been leading and mentoring junior admins and engineers. From the very basics to complex automation builds I've had the chance to cultivate the next generation of really great engineers.
Director Of Technical Operations
nivio provided a hosted Windows desktop that was available on basically any device, along with storage and full applications available on a subscription basis.I came in to nivio and helped solidify and scale the service. We moved to AWS for the infrastructure and put in place some better deployment and management systems. It was a very mixed environment when it came to technology. The service used some traditional Microsoft products mixed with Linux and OSS offerings. The blending of enterprise Microsoft offerings like App-V with things like custom Ruby based session management software was challenging but very rewarding to see work.
Cloud Architect
I helped companies transition from traditional server implementations to housing their applications in the cloud. This was primarily for teams that were ready to move faster than their parent company. Horizontal growth across cloud instances vs. vertical server growth was a new concept for many and took some adjustment and education to get the most out of a cloud deployment.
Senior Systems Engineer
Designed, implemented and maintained a system for multiple Microsoft services using SCOM and a custom synthetic transaction tool for system and application health and performance monitoring.Service trending with Alive. Service health monitoring with Gomez. Deployed and maintained ~2000 Windows application servers.
Operating System Engineer
Built Windows servers for complex and unique environments(SQL Clusters, SQL DAN, IIS Farms)Supported ~1500 Windows serversDiagnosed GPO settings needed to keep servers compliantEvaluated and wrote audit and remediation scripts for server complianceEvaluated training courses for engineers to determine value
Hosted Services - Network Administrator
I came to Renaissance to help with the move to becoming a Saas provider. This meant implementing virtualization and providing a way to manage a applications at scale that had been written for smaller server-client implemenations.Performed long-term deep testing of VMware, Virtual Iron and Hyper-V.~18,000 schools using the apps on the servers with students taking over 1,000,000 quizzes per dayLoad spread across ~ 215 IIS servers, ~30 SQL servers and ~25 Report serversWrote automation processes and reporting programs to forecast future needs and activity
President
Started a tech-services company that did network, server and development work.Exchange migrations, AD upgrades, web app migrations, backup systems upgrades, web app development, both customer facing and internal use.
Project Specific Manager
Managed an organization of 177 including 12 direct report managers and 15 support personnel. We were a complete org containing everything from the technical resources to logistics so that we could be self-contained and as efficient as possible.
