A veteran journalist, I write and edit copy for publications, nonprofits, businesses and professionals. Clients have included Central Oregon alternative weekly The Source, online news publication Global Press Journal, Central Oregon telecommunications leader BendBroadband (now TDS), and several UN subsidiary NGOs. In 2013, I substantially contributed to the Bethlehem Inn's successful application for a $300,000 grant from the Affordable Housing Fee Program of the City of Bend; using those funds, the nonprofit purchased the land on which it expanded an emergency shelter and case management hub for people experiencing homelessness. I can tackle a range of projects, from feature stories to organizational newsletters.

I served as slot (chief copy editor) at The Bulletin, an outstanding regional daily based in Bend, Oregon. I performed the final examination of copy for the news, feature, business and commentary sections. I assured the accuracy and quality of headlines for those sections. I mentored the staff copy editors.

I served as copy editor and slot at Nebraska's dominant statewide news organization. I edited stories, wrote headlines, and served as slot two to three times a week.

I covered social trends and spot news for an outstanding media company based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; my best contributions were personality profiles and human interest stories. I had the honor and privilege of covering the cultural life of Iowa City, a robust university town. I met brilliant authors, poets, artists, researchers, philosophers, politicians and journalists, including Marilynne Robinson, Marvin Bell, John Irving, John Edwards, Dennis Kucinich, Ethan Canin, Juliet B. Schor, Carl Honoré, Greg Brown and Vance Gilbert.

I edited news copy, designed pages and wrote headlines. I regularly designed 1A. I served as copy chief and nation/world editor as needed. I filled in as columnist when a staffer vacationed, winning a pair of national awards for serious and humor columns.

I covered municipalities and school districts in St. Louis and St. Charles counties, providing both news stories and photographs.

St. Charles, Mo.

I worked to heighten the quality of four community newspapers by cultivating creativity, enterprise and dedication to excellence; promoted teamwork and consensus-building; and strengthenedcommunity relations. My responsibilities included: hiring and supervising staff of 20 writers,editors, designers and photographers; recruiting and directing 20 to 30 correspondents;overseeing reporting, story placement; copy editing, headline writing and page design; serving onthe editorial board and contributing editorials; and managing the budgets of three publishing companies. Experience gained in these years would yield lessons for a lifetime.

Greater St. Louis Area

I served in various roles at the Suburban Journals, ranging from county government reporter and feature writer at the Jefferson County Journal to managing editor of the County Star-Journal in northwest St. Louis County. While writing a weekly column for the Journal Newspapers of St. Charles County in the early '90s, I touched a nerve by, in one caller's words, “deliberately stirring empathy” for a family whose runaway dog had been shot dead.

I edited news and feature copy; wrote attention-grabbing headlines; and worked variously as floor editor, wire editor, slot and layout editor. Won the Scripps-Howard Newspapers' Headline Writer of the Month Award in two consecutive months. A brand-new managing editor learned my identity when he asked the news editor who wrote this front-page headline: "Cold-weather records set/from sea to freezing sea." Said the ME: “That headline sings. It just sings!”
