The team and I spent five week’s sessions at Unilever Boksburg in the powder soaps department addressing the project topic: ‘waste’ in packaging... Theoretical area that were put into practical applications that were covered in "Lean Thinking" include: - continuous improvement - people involvement- standardisation - tracking & monitoring - specifying value The conclusion to this project addressed areas specific to packaging waste in the powder soaps department, reducing the waste by at least 20% in having the correct co-ordination in which soaps going in what packaging, having the lines run at the correct speed and monitored when there is a problem.

Ray Mordt Sisonke Hydraulics & Engineering (RMSH&E): The internship at RMSH&E covered the processes of the refurbishment and manufacturing of hydraulic cylinders and pumps used in the mining industry.Skills learned during internship time spent at RMSH&E:- Procurement: adopting a stock-pull system versus a stock push-system, in order to match clients demand and not sit with excess stock. (Having at least 3x suppliers’ quotes)- Technical Drawing: hand sketching as well as digital using AutoCAD.- Systems & Process: SAP computer systems recording everything fromincoming jobs, WIP, quality out, to outgoing jobs.- Quality Control: testing the quality of work to be done as well as testing thequality of work completed by using the correct instruments and gauges.
