In 2007 I was the youngest pilot ever hired by NetJets and flying celebrities and executives all over the US.Then, in 2010 I got laid off.Flying was my entire identity. Put me in a cockpit, and I knew exactly what to do. Furlough me, and even when I knew what to do, I couldn’t move.So that's exactly what I did for three weeks.I lay there, paralyzed on the couch, knowing exactly what to do and doing nothing.Eventually, my wife Ilene (a Dispatcher with a degree in Meteorology) came home and said, “Ok, here’s the deal: you tell me what you need to do, and I will do it for you.”I showed her how to find the names of all the people I needed to target. She put together the list, wrote and printed my resume, and pressed my suits.She even drove me to every single interview and networking event.And when I’d get rejected, she’d give me a hug and drive me to the next place.That’s when it clicked.Finding a job isn’t about resumes and applications and interview prep.It’s about having someone there with you when you are feeling down.
