What picture would come to mind if you were asked to imagine a farmer? In my experience, most people envision the typical American farmer as depicted in Grant Wood’s painting "American Gothic". In reality, the world has seen revolutionary growth in modern agriculture, and with the introduction of advanced precision technologies and improved business practices, there is an increased demand for educated professionals. The knowledge necessary to navigate the challenges of feeding an exponentially growing population is ever-increasing and no other industry touches the lives of quite so many through the decisions of so few. As a Farm Unit Manager overseeing the production of 1,400 acres of walnuts, almonds and prunes, I have a unique opportunity to touch the lives of people in countries around the world. The values of hard work, integrity, problem-solving, and professionalism are what embody success at Deseret Farms of California. It is my privilege to work for a company and with individuals who share these fundamental character aspirations. As a graduate from Utah State University with an MS in Agribusiness, I have learned that education, whether obtained through traditional schooling or through hands on experience, is essential for effective management and efficient operations. American businessman and writer Alvin Toffler described learning in this way: “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn.” My growing work experience and desire to be a lifelong learner will be the catalyst that propels me forward as the agriculturalist, steward, and consummate professional that is required in today’s agribusiness environment.
