As Chief Electrical Engineer I manage and coordinate a team of engineering students to design, manufacture and race a fully electric race car for the Formula SAE competition. Delegation of tasks is a key component of my role, ensuring that jobs are completed on time and within the allocated budget is of utmost importance. My focus in 2016 has been in the three following areas: Powertrain, Documentation and Team Development. Throughout the history of RMIT Electric Racing, the powertrain has had to use components that are not designed for electric race cars. To become a top tier race car, we needed to develop purpose built powertrain components whilst maintaining a knowledge base within the team through the documentation of designs, purchases, process and ideas. As the team has no first or second year electrical students, my goal will be to recruit new members and develop their knowledge, so in future years RMIT will have strong knowledge retention leading to a top tier race car.My roles include:• Facilitate all of the team purchases, ensuring correct components are selected and processed within an allocated time.• Focus on the development of the powertrain of the vehicle for future improvements.• Design and integration of the accumulators. • Sponsorship from electrical firms.• Managing social media sites.• Cloud based network management. • Organizing and presenting weekly meetings.• Human resources, organizing inductions and work.• Electrical Safety Officer, ensuring safety of others.• 480Vdc 6.4kWh battery pack design, assembly and testing.

The aim of this project is to design a high torque dense electric motor to improve the performance of a light weight electric racing car. For example, the racing cars that compete in the Formula Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) competition. This application is sensitive to weight and efficiency; currently top teams are using a radial-flux motor with gears for hub wheel applications, an Axial Flux motor would not need gears reducing weight and increasing efficiency.

As the Head of Powertrain and High Voltage, I had to ensure that all the systems over 60V where working and race ready. My roles include.•High Voltage to Low Voltage sensor PCB design.•Drive unit integration•Packing design and testing of a 6kW battery pack•Fusing and cabling for high voltage system •Researched motor design

I interned at SEW EURODRIVE over the summer of 2015/2016 which allowed me the opportunity to apply my University education to practical skills and problem solving within a manufacturing environment. At SEW EURODRIVE I worked on 2 projects with Engineers and another Intern. These projects were Safety Demo Units and MultiMotion Handling Kinematics with safety technology.MultiMotion Handling Kinematics with safety technology.This project involved integrating a PLC with four motor inverters, four motors and functional safety technology with numerous safety peripherals.Safety Demo UnitsConstruction and setup of Safety Demo Units for SEW EURODRIVE Engineers to use as testing units.This involved purchasing parts, assembling motors and wiring.
