About James Peck

I am a dedicated laboratory operations professional with a background in neuroscience research and a decade of experience managing labs and site operations in academia and industry.I was initially drawn to neuroscience because I am interested in learning how the brain produces goal-directed behavior, and what happens when the system malfunctions such as during stroke or mental illness. In my studies, I explored how the brain can do this at the level of the individual neuron, as well as how different brain regions act in concert to produce a behavioral output in response to sensory input.I received a master’s degree in behavioral neuroscience from Dartmouth College, and my thesis research explored the neural correlates of spatial navigation in rats. Specifically, I investigated how the brain processes visual and spatial information to maintain a representation of distance and direction within the environment. To this end, I studied the brain using in vivo single-unit electrophysiology during waking behavior in rats. I also employed behavioral assays to investigate the contribution of specific brain regions to produce behavior. After realizing that a career in academia may not be the path for me, I have since transitioned from the bench to a role in lab management, and I spent several years managing a lab at UC Berkeley before moving to a biotech startup. It was in this role that I found my passion for being part of a team and supporting the science to cure disease. I hope to continue my journey in lab operations, and I am eager for new challenges.
