Scaled an engineering team from 3 to 7 engineers. Set up a “staggered” onboarding mentorship structure which led to an effective and fast ramp-up.Set up a Mentored Project Lead rotation allowing every engineer to lead projects. Worked with TL to simplify the PL guide and project templates to remove unnecessary friction. Led to a very resilient team that is able to pivot on projects effectively.Had a short stint as Interim Director (~5 months) where I supported a manager with their team challenges, bridged gaps between directors and my own teams, and drove follow-ups for the engagement survey. Coached engineers of various levels (interns to staff) to address diverse growth areas such as effective collaboration, how to approach problems and how to influence prioritization of technical work. Led to significant growth for individuals and the prioritization of high impact work for the business.Strategically coordinated the staffing of a team in record time. Considered the team’s & business goals for the team, pitched engineers with the right skill sets and made sure the teams leaving behind remain in a healthy state.Drove the rechartering of a highly technical team which led to more clarity for company leadership on which areas the business should invest. Coordinated collaborations with other teams to raise feature limits for customers.

Successfully motivated the team to take on the maintenance of a legacy third party service that has been managed by two people over the years and with different teams. The move fostered a lot of ideas that improved the system and drastically reduced production issues for the business. I guided the team with a data driven approach to understand which parts needed the most attention.Researched and created a framework for career progression plans for the software engineers in the team. This led to higher engagement from the engineers and provided them with a clear progression path. The work also led to some promotions a short time after.Hired skilled software engineers for the team and department. Provided a more rapid approach for hiring without sacrificing the depth and quality of the evaluation.

R&D Manager

Led the team to build a data engine that scaled an existing application. The project meant coordinating with three other teams at its peak and managing various types of stakeholders. It resulted in an increased performance of ~430% to render the Storyboards for our customers, a critical tool used by executives and boards of directors. I worked with various stakeholders: the Principal Engineer spearheading the technical design, Product & Engineering Managers from other teams with which the system integrated and Directors/VP to make sure we're on the same page with the roadmap and goals. Closely supported the teams with debugging various problems over the years. From slow performance to scalability issues. It allowed me to build better dashboards and visualizations to improve observability of our services. Also built solid alert monitoring routines and guidelines as a consequence. Booted up the Vancouver Full Stack Developers meetup from scratch. It achieved great interest from the community with one of the meetups reaching 130 attendees at its peak pre Covid. It increased interest in our business from engineers in the Vancouver area.Ramped up a team from scratch with the goal of building said data engine. Led the team through storming, norming and performing resulting in a culture of excellence and fun. The team’s values are Adventure, Ownership and Quality.Able to support Product Managers in the more technical part of the requirements. An example includes understanding the datatype formats that customers use and what they could use in the future. Required understanding the use cases in depth as well as digging in various parts of the code and database to understand what the actual status quo was. Led to a clear consistent spec for the platform.Supported the creation of an open source policy for the business. Involved the cooperation with the legal department to come up with a clear guideline. Allowed us to open source some of the business’s code.

Team Lead, Software Development

Led a team of engineers in the Medeo division. My responsibilities included managing the team, handling sprints and planning meetings, hiring and keeping the team’s goals aligned with those of QHR. My favourite task was (and still is) mentoring and learning from the team whenever I can.Managed and led the development of an online appointment booking system which connects patients to the Accuro EMR. The app was built with AngularJS and connects to a set of Rails APIs. It drastically reduces the manual processing effort to book patients at a clinic.Architected, developed and led a team of developers to migrate the app to a SSO system. This enabled selling the app in the United States and set a foundation towards integration with other EMRs. The main code base was written in Ruby on Rails.
