I lead our global technical team for public sector healthcare (non-profit, academic, government) and our global healthcare technical community across all of AWS. We support providers, payors, researchers, and regulators as they advance healthcare around the world by helping them apply cloud technology. I also engage with healthcare executives and industry analysts to help them understand what healthcare services offers AWS and our partners offer, the capabilities of our global healthcare tech team, and how customers are succeeding using AWS,

I started and led AWS' Solutions Architecture team supporting all US academic medical centers (AMCs). We help AMCs use the AWS cloud to advance medical research, improve hospital operations, and develop next-generation curriculum for schools of medicine. This is a national team composed of specialists in electronic health record systems, bioinformatics, genomics, health AI/ML, clinical and research medical imaging, mobile medical applications, open source research tools, and many other topics.

Worked with academic medical centers, which are universities that have an affiliated hospital system, a school of medicine, and that perform medical research. I helped them use the AWS cloud to securely host their sensitive applications and data, including Protected Health Information (PHI). I typically worked with:∙ Executives like CIOs, Chief Research Officers, CTOs, Chief Academic Information Officers, Chief Medical Officers, Chief Medical Informatics Officers, and Deans to help them understand the capabilities of AWS and how they relate to their real-world opportunities and challenges. This includes understanding how AWS can enable their organization to be more agile and lower their overall cost of IT.• CISOs, Directors of IT and Research, and their staff like systems administrators and cyber security analysts to help them understand how to implement secure and compliant systems within AWS that meet architectural best practices. Of particular importance is the ability to meet the requirements of HIPAA and FISMA and provide their organization with governance and insight throughout their AWS environment.• Researchers, clinicians, and professors to help them understand how to access the tools and data that are important to their work on AWS. These include tools for biomedical informatics, genomics, high performance computing (HPC), clinical trials research, predictive machine learning models, and other domains.• Open source research data and tool communities like OHDSI, REDCap, the Broad Institute, and MIT Laboratory for Computational Physiology to translate their tools and data to AWS and increase research agility and cost effectiveness.

• Work directly for our CTO and regularly communicate with and present to our CIO and other executive staff members.• Provide leadership, sales engineering, and architecture for the development of infrastructure solutions and data center migration plans for IT hosting clients. This includes many successful Federal and Commercial contracts totaling hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue. These solutions have a variety of regulatory and compliance requirements for standards like HIPAA, PCI, FISMA, FedRAMP, CMSR, and NIST.• Worked directly and closely with our Chief Medical Informatics Officer and his data science team to implement IBM Data Science Experience which utilizes Kubernetes, Docker, R-Studio, Python, Jupyter Notebooks, Apache Spark, OHDSI and OMOP open source projects and other Big Data technologies.• Architected a Private IaaS Cloud using Red Hat OpenStack, Ceph Storage, and Cisco ACI networking to present self-service VMs, networks, load-balancing, object storage, and bare-metal servers.• Architected and cost-optimized many HIPAA-compliant solutions on AWS for existing application migrations and big data analytics using EC2, IAM, RedShift, EMR, WorkSpaces, Directory Services, etc.• Lead and oversee the development of our cloud architecture and internally developed Cloud Orchestration System. This system designs, deploys, and manages x86 servers, IBM pSeries servers, Oracle Solaris servers, IBM z/Linux servers (under z/VM), IBM z/OS LPARs, SAN storage, IPv4 and IPv6 networks, RedHat Linux, SuSE Linux, Windows Server, Windows Workstations, Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop virtual workstations (VDI), IBM WebSphere, JBoss, IBM DB2, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle Database, MongoDB, MySQL, F5 Load Balancers, Cisco Nexus routing and switching, Avaya VoIP telephony, SAN storage, DNS and many more technologies. This oversight includes approval of all new technology contracts and purchases.

* Was a member of the infrastructure technical leadership team reporting to our CTO. Took the technical leadership role on large infrastructure projects to ensure they aligned with our organizational objectives.* Provided final technical review and approval for all new infrastructure designs.* Led innovation and research initiatives and produced whitepapers for executive review, including TCO and ROI estimation. This included topics like IaaS cloud computing, infrastructure patching tools, SaaS services like Office365, and Bring-Your-Own-Desktop initiatives.* Led the organizational initiative to define technology ownership by subject matter experts throughout the organization. This was based on an inventory of all enterprise technologies which I helped curate and maintain. This initiative involved organizational speaking events with hundreds of attendees.* Developed and delivered content for our internal training program for system designers.

• Lead the team and managed our work using Agile principles. Developed software monitoring applications using shell scripting, Java, and C programs. Used Nagios and other networking and infrastructure tools to gather key performance and fault metrics. This data was used to improve SLAs and business processes for customer facing applications.• These systems monitored backend applications developed in Java as well as web applications developed in HTML, CSS, and Javascript. Developing this monitoring required close collaboration with the development team and detailed understanding of these application.• Within 2 years we were able to apply application and infrastructure monitoring to all of our major enterprise systems and reduce the mean time to resolution for incidents.

• Was selected along with two other people from the enterprise to research and successfully implement virtualization of SUSE Linux on an IBM z/Series mainframe with IBM WebSphere ND, IBM WebSphere Portal, and IBM DB2. This system supported Java web applications, SOAP/XML web services, and legacy application integration.• Worked with another technician to develop and implement a technology called “shared root”. Later iterations of this technology would win an IBM SHARE award.

• Supported network discovery, design, and documentation in a large Enterprise Data Center environment with multiple locations. • Architected and engineered the pre-sales network solution to successfully win a Federal Employee Program hosting contract.• Engineered and wrote portions of a successful proposal for the Federal CMS Enterprise Data Center contract.
