I’m currently a deputy managing director and senior research director at the Bank of Canada in the Banking and Payments Department. I oversee a team of about a dozen research staff whos’ goal is to provide research, analysis and build models to support the Bank’s client facing activities as a central participant in Canadian payment systems. We provide innovative cutting edge research that gets published in the top academic journals and provides the most up-to-date tools for Bank executives to help in decision making. A second part of my job is to manage, with my fellow senior research directors and the managing director of Economic, and Financial Research, the overall Bank of Canada research agenda and provide strategic leadership for Bank researchers.Prior to this position, I was the inaugural research director at Payments Canada, which is the operator of the core payments infrastructure and is a center of excellence in payment knowledge. In this role, I built a team of solid data science professionals which helps Payments Canada in its project to modernize the Canadian Payment System.I am truly passionate about building research capabilities for an organization. I love knowing that I am helping more junior researchers and data scienists develop into trusted effective members of the organization. I also like to keep up-to-data on the latest statistical tools. I still delve into the data to build my own models and gain my own insights. I do this with R or Python both of which I’ve been developing in for more then a decade.I have a PhD from the University of Iowa where I studied applied econometrics under Harry Paarsch who eventually became a Principal Economist at Amazon working in their Machine Learning Team. I also obtained a MSc in Statistics from University of Iowa where many of my courses where with computational statistician Luke Tierney one of the core developers of R.
