I've been an owner/operator in Electronics Recycling (ITAD) and Data Destruction services since 2011. But back when I started I had no idea that I was building a social enterprise. I had spent five years as a coffee shop manager for a ministry in Kansas City. And back then: - I never would have dreamt that I’d be making contributions to nonprofits well over my annual income at the time. - I didn’t know the difference between a hard drive & processor. - I’d never made a spreadsheet, much less been responsible for entire business. Since then we've grown Phoenix Solutions to resource nonprofits with cash, computers and content through our ITAD services, working with companies all over the US. Essentially we’re: an electronics recycling company + foundation + content agency = all rolled into one Social Enterprise Imagine us in the center of a Venn diagram with for profit efficiencies in one circle and nonprofit heart in the other. We need profitability so we can grow and be healthy, while also caring about ALL stakeholder value (not just shareholder value), and also being generous within our local community. Having been at this for over a decade, I now help:- Businesses securely/sustainable recycle end-of-life tech - CSR Teams improve and further their community impact- ESG Teams receive environmental impact reporting on the e-waste disposition process- Nonprofits further their impact through cash, computers and content contributionsI talk about: - Sustainability (Recycling & Circularity) - Philanthropy / Generosity- Social Impact- Entrepreneurship My results: - A few 100 tons of e-waste sustainably recycled - Thousands of hard drives and data bearing devices securely destroyed- Hundreds of reverse logistics e-waste recycling pickups executed- Approx. 100k assets refurbished & resold- A dozen nonprofit partnerships- 3 water projects funded with charity: water in Uganda - Digital content donated to nonprofits to further their impact stories- Computers donated for: - hunger relief organization - refugee human services - child advocacy centers - adoption agencies - various missions & ministriesFeels like I’m bragging but I just really care about the causes that matter most being fully resourced. There’s so much missed impact opportunity but that also means there's low hanging fruit. The more Phoenix Solutions grows the more we can give.
