Management & Ownership of plantation forests

Responsible for creating non forest business from the Matariki Forest estate, which at at 180,000 hectares is the 3rd largest forest estate in New Zealand. Current areas of interest include Biomass, carbon trading, hydropower, wind power, telecommunications, alternative crops (mushrooms, truffles, ginseng), charcoal production, recreation events.

The Mentor acts as a student's coach, supporting and guiding the student throughout the scholarship. Working through a monitored programme designed by the First Foundation, the Mentor also provides assistance with life issues such as budgetary advice, time management and goal setting.

Responsibility for the Hawkes Bay regional forests of approximately 22,000 hectares. Manage the forest estate and its associated silviculture, harvesting, merchandising, distribution and domestic sales along with staff of 10. Responsible for managing relationships with iwi, lessors, customers, local regulatory bodies, community groups, neighbours and other stakeholders.

Managed all freehold, lease and Crown Forest Licences land based issues and rentals for 142,000 ha’s across the length of NZ.Evaluated Estate for higher and better use and implemented plan.Managed sale process of non strategic land.Ran a land sales program of approx $6m per annumExamined land / forest purchase potential as came on market

Managed harvest planning, production and delivery of 850,000 cbm of logs per annum.Managed budget in excess of $22m per annum.Had 4 direct reports and 1 other report. Implemented accurate wood flow forecasting systems to ensure customers weekly orders were meet.Planned for and started to implement a reduction in harvest of 150,000 cbm per annum caused by age class gaps (including a nil planting year).
