I am Media Manager at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, a leading teaching and research institution that trains global health leaders and influences global health policy by conducting world class scientific studies.Working closely with national and international health and science journalists on a daily basis, my small team generate media coverage across the globe by creating story packages for a wide-range of research, including novel methods to tackle existing and emerging infectious diseases, migrant health and the implication of food taxes.I support leading scientists in all aspects of media work, from writing reaction comment to breaking news stories and developing thought-leadership pieces, to drafting news stories and full media training. This includes Professor Peter Piot, Director of the School, pioneering HIV researcher and part of the team that discovered the Ebola virus.I work closely with the marketing, events, multimedia and web teams in LSHTM’s fantastic Communications and Engagement Department to deliver campaigns. Over the 8 and 9 November LSHTM hosted the 2nd Women Leaders in Global Health Conference, a strategic event for the School. It was a wonderful team effort that resulted in nearly 900 people attending from around the world, discussing issues and potential ways forward to boost gender equity in global health. A Times front page lead, a hit on ‘Today’ and Reuters piece helped spread the news.Over the past year, working with social media co-ordinator, I’ve developed a social media tone and brand that has been the catalyst for a rapid increase in followers and engagement across all our main platforms. Videos, podcasts, memes, infographics and the occasional pun are just some of the reasons.I enjoy managing teams and developing individuals, while having fun at work and helping improve global health.
