My background is in maths and science, not the arts, but there's still plenty of room for creativity in my job. It’s my responsibility to use all of our skill and experience to deliver the returns our clients need with as little risk and fuss as possible. And to do it better than the competition. But we can’t be better than the competition by always doing the same thing. So we’re intentionally non-conformist.When commissions were the norm, we charged transparent fees. When others sold ‘balanced funds’, we developed stochastic modelling tools to evaluate the return and risk our clients needed to achieve their objectives. Then we constructed strategies that delivered. Now we’re exploring how machine learning can inform our asset allocation and investment selection decisions. There’s something in the field of psychology known as the ‘Edison trait’. It’s borne out of the ‘free-thinking’ ability of some children to see ordinary things in extraordinary ways. And not to be limited by what others around them are thinking or doing. It’s my job to keep the ‘Edison trait’ alive and well here. Show less
