Field engineering to enhance newly built multi-engine diesel locomotives. Services included software updates for locomotive control including engine scheduling, traction control and genset operation. The original design required electrical re-configuration to improve electrical spike protection. Circuit board modifications required for lower voltage signal recognition. Significant improvements to general operation in the amount of load the locomotives could pull and kick.

Contract engineering for development of field test methods for FRA system approval. Review of contract documents and FRA regulations for compliance.

Cab Equipment Project Engineer for the Alaska Railroad Corporation Positive Train Control (PTC) project. Tasks included scheduling, System Engineering, Engineering Supervision, and budget control. The system integrated existing radio and GPS technologies for onboard vital train control.

Beyond specific project positions, I worked on potential project proposal efforts providing documentation and proposed system designs. I also worked on internal processes and procedures including CMM II certification.

US&S Wayside Project Engineer for the Montreal Laval Extension. The project consisted of a 5.2 km extension of the Montreal Metro north under the St Lawrence river to Laval. Control electronics were totally updated and retrofitted for three existing stations: Creamazie, Sauve, and Henri-Bourassa. Three new stations were added: Cartier, Concord and Montmorency (terminus). The project was a worldwide effort with US&S project engineering in Pittsburgh, PA and Montreal; US&S wayside team engineering in Bangalore, India; equipment suppliers in France, Canada and the USA; and the Montreal Metro Team in Montreal. New equipment designs were required for vintage designs no longer available, which included new track impedance bonds and dragging equipment detector systems.Opened phase 1 on schedule which avoided liquidated damages.

US&S Lead CAB Equipment Engineer for the Port Authority of Allegheny County (PAAC) Stage II Light Rail Transit (LRT) Project. The project included new wayside signaling equipment utilizing US&S AF900 Digital Track Circuits and new cab equipment to be installed on existing Light Rail Vehicles (LRV) and new LRVs. Tasks included supervision of the cab engineering process, scheduling, managing requirements, customer interface, car builder interface and budget. This was a new application of the Micro-Cab equipment utilizing it as a digital step system. The new equipment designed was very cost effective to manufacture and became the base package for future proposal efforts. Several improvements were made to the PAAC system including several improvements to the receiving antennae, Micro-Cab packaging and operator interface. The cab portion of the project was under budget and on schedule.

Systems engineer for the Los Angeles Green Line Automatic Train Control equipment utilizing AF900 Track Circuits and Micro-Cab onboard equipment. One task was to translate and verify Green Line civil drawing data into an onboard database for software control. Problems existed in the current operation and with the new update provided the control problems were eliminated as to location and grade. I also generated System Level documents including the development and approval of test plans and procedures for system acceptance and approval. Profile field test results would be electronically transmitted to Pittsburgh in the morning and test reports generated for customer approval.

Systems Engineering and software optimization at the GM Romulus Engine Plant in the Detroit Area. The plant produced the 350 ci V8 and the V6 Vortec engines. A new automated line had been installed, but it was not operating to expectations. I was assigned the task of software rewrite for the computerized Corvette crankshaft grinding machine.

Boise, Idaho• Project Engineer for Railroad Event Recorder Development for Metro-North Commuter Railroad. Supervised hardware and software designs. Developed system level design documentation and wrote the final data analysis software for the project.• Lead Engineer for BART/ARPA Wayside interface Advanced Train Control system. This is a Communication Based Train Control based on the U.S. Army's Enhanced Position Location Reporting System (EPLRS) developed by Hughes Aircraft for locating and communicating with military units in the battlefield. EPLRS radios were installed on the wayside and on the trains.

Worked on many proposal efforts and directed teams on many projects. • Lead Electrical Engineer for Metro-North M-6 program. Supervised all electrical engineering activities. Developed a database for tracking all wiring and connections for a vehicle with 17 miles of onboard wiring. Interfaced with both customer and suppliers.

Boise, IDNew factory equipment integration for various automotive manufacturing and automated distribution centers. Re-wrote the Control Systems Emulation (CSE) workstation software package for equipment diagnostics and maintenance and greatly improved the operator interface. The CSE workstation interfaced to Programable Logic Controllers for equipment diagnostics and startup operations. A letter of commendation from General Motors stated that the software/system was saving in excess of $100,000 per press startup. What it would normally take six men six days to accomplish, two men were accomplishing in two hours. At an ARMY installation, the Army Corp of Engineers did not think it was necessary to provide this check of equipment and connectivity. The Corp was very impressed when wires that were visually terminated correctly were found to have the wrong wire labels installed and were incorrectly terminated.
