As an Examiner and the Technical Leader of the Firearm and Toolmark Section, I was in charge of triaging and assigning cases while maintaining a case load myself, providing oversight and application of laboratory techniques, insuring the section had the necessary materials, current chemicals, properly working equipment and instruments to be utilized during the laboratory examination of evidence. I wrote validations methods, proposed new or modified analytical procedures, conducted performance checks and verifications, and evaluated methods used in the Section. I would evaluate all requests for deviation from procedure within the section, and determine that a requested deviation is technically justified before approval.I interacted routinely with detectives, investigators and lawyers providing a full array of services beyond the routine customer service such as: offering insight into an investigation that may have grown cold, or providing expedited investigative leads prior to the search being conducted, explaining the information enclosed in the discovery packet in an educational manner during pretrial meetings, providing in-service education and providing expert testimony.What I loved the most about this job was breaking open my next case. I processed each case with the same level of enthusiasm and attention to detail whether it was a suicide or a capital murder.I worked: firearms for functionality, determined caliber and class information on fired bullets/cartridge cases, performed microscopic comparisons of firearm related evidence (bullets, cartridge cases, wads, shotshells, etc), restored obliterated serial numbers, microscopically evaluated, examined and compared tool marks, conducted physical fit / fracture match examinations and examined clothing for the presence of bullet defects, gunshot residues and evaluate autopsy photographs and documentation of the wound for the purpose of conducting range of fire (distance determination) testing.
