Honours year Dissertation In order to consolidate our skills and knowledge from the last four years all students were to conduct a project both independently and at times working alongside an industrial partner.The project was completed with collaboration with both a academic and an industrial supervisor.The project in question was examining the designs of a sampling device with the overall aim being to successfully construct a working prototype which could be used for further project development.Project Areas:-Project management -Design Methodology -Computer Aided Modelling and Assembly-Creating technical drawings -Materials Analysis -ANSYS analysis of device -Mechancal validation of the ANSYS results -Research into the gears and motor for device -Ensuring that the device was mathematically sealed -Manufacturing research -Teamwork The opportunity to work on such an interesting, in-depth and challenging project whilst working with a professional from the industry was a great learning experience which allowed me to reflect on my skills, improve these and build confidence for my future career.

Returning to the same Oil and gas manufacturing company a further 4-week placement was completed, however this time there was more of a focus on offline programming for CNC machines with the use of edge cam manufacturing software. The offline programming team in Hyspec Engineering is responsible for generating the codes that will be used to manufacture the components on the main shop floor, this is done by simulating the manufacture process and using this simulation to generate eh appropriate CNC code.During this four weeks i gained basic experience in the use of edge cam software and was able to see the benefits that offline CNC programming can have in a fast paced manufacturing environment.

During the summer break from studying i gained the opportunity to spend 6 weeks in a local engineering firm that specializes in the manufacture of components for the oil and gas industry. During this time I gained an insight into the engineering industry allowing for a better idea of what is expected when entering the professional world.-Shadowing a experienced CNC machinist allowing to better understand some of the issues that can occur and how they overcome them.-Working in the quality control section on the business looking at the stages each component undertakes before it is shipped to the customer.-Working alongside the office staff who are responsible offering the raw materials for the components,The 6 weeks spent with Hyspec engineering was concluded with a presentation that was given to various members of the company including the managing director.
