As consultant and project manager at Tessella, I have worked on several client projects spanning a variety of domains, technologies, and roles, from fundamental fusion research to R&D transformation in consumer products firms.I have been leading development teams and managing high value R&D and engineering projects for over 15 years, including teams distributed over several continents. As a project manager, I have specialised in helping clients get value from their initiatives early on, using agile methodologies such as scrum and Kanban. My ability to quickly understand new domains, and my background in physics and software engineering, allows me to act as an effective product owner for clients, bridging the gap between the user and technical domains. As such, I provide expert understanding of the scientific domain and support my clients by helping prioritise the backlog to deliver the most value, answering questions from the development team, and identifying innovate new solutions to challenges.I have also managed firm fixed-price projects for several clients. My project management experience includes spending several years working with the project control teams at F4E (a €6.6bn construction project) and then a $100bn infrastructure project in the Middle East. By analysing and making sense of their complex, interrelated project (schedule, cost, risk, scope, etc.) and engineering data, we helped them keep the overall programmes under control.For two years, I chaired the Tessella committee in charge of internal conferences. I was responsible for arranging all aspects of the Tessella Conference, including managing and developing the conference team and improving the quality of presentations given by Tessella staff. In this time, I introduced several significant changes to the conference programme, which were described as a step change by the leadership team.

Team leader for developers based in the UK, India and France working on a large ASP.NET based data management system. An agile-style development process was followed, with monthly release cycles. James introduced unit testing and promoted good development practice within the team. James also gave technical and architectural advice for other development teams based at ITER. Responsible for the SharePoint Farm installation and initial administration.
