Originally hailing from Orkney (Scotland), I obtained my MSc in Lancaster (England), employing photogrammetry to analyse the Puyehue-Cordón Caulle lava flowfield with Mike James and Hugh Tuffen. I undertook my PhD in Strasbourg (France), where I focussed on volcano permeability, rock deformation, and eating croissants, supervised by Mike Heap and Patrick Baud. After a postdoc in the same department, investigating acid stimulation and geothermal reservoir dissolution, I relocated to Florida, with a stint as a NASA-funded postdoctoral research associate at the University of Miami, working at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences with Falk Amelung. A short research position in Lancaster in 2021 was followed by another year in Strasbourg, where I worked on ways to develop open access publishing in the Earth sciences. Since September 2023, I am a Specially Appointed Professor at Niigata University. I'm currently researching the triggering of volcanic eruptions by external forces, the potential for incorporating experimental data into edifice-scale deformation models, and reactive fluid flow through volcanic systems.Specific research interests include permeability of volcanic systems and the effect of permeability on eruption dynamics; remote-sensing-based reconstruction of volcanic landscapes; integrating satellite-based datasets into models of volcanic processes, and linking laboratory measurements to volcanic edifice-scale deformation. I also do a bit of numerical modelling, a bit of fieldwork, and a bit of consultant work for sci-fi authors (it's a thing). I am passionate about open-access, and am founder and Editor-in-chief of Volcanica, a diamond open-access journal publishing volcano-related research (check it out at: www.jvolcanica.org).
