Software Engineer at BT - currently working as a lead front-end developer for both internal and external projects. I have 5+ years experience in JavaScript (ES6), using accompanying technologies such as ReactJS, CSS, SASS, and a multitude of libraries for frontend development. For backend, I tend to work with NodeJS or python, ExpressJS for routing, and MySQL for databases. I have solid experience in both unit and integration testing (specifically Jest and TestCafé).During my time at BT, I have worked on external projects (500,000+ active customers/users), ranging anywhere from simple bug fixes to implementing key features. Working in larger development teams encourages best practices as readability and maintenance is essential (and a strict code review process enforces this). I have also worked on multiple internal web apps - created for helping other teams work at their best by providing a more streamlined workflow, or allowing automation for otherwise manual tasks. Working on projects like these gave me great experience with both setting up and improving projects’ deployments, for example containerising (Dockerising) projects, setting up/improving Jenkins Pipelines and using Gitlab as a CI/CD tool.As an apprentice, alongside my work within BT, I am studying for a BSc in Digital and Technology Solutions with the University of Suffolk. This has given me the theoretical understanding behind software processes and best practices, and the practical work I have been doing for BT has allowed me to implement this knowledge. An example of some of the more relevant modules I have completed over the past 3 years (and received a grade of 70%+ for) include Operating Systems, Introduction to Programming, Software Design Development and Engineering, Emergent Technologies and Information Engineering. I am due to finish my degree in July 2023.During the summer of 2022, the university ran a 2 month project with the task of collecting live environmental data (temperature, humidity, pressure and air quality) from within the UoS’s purpose-built Smart Home. This data was then sent to a server to store and process the data, and the results displayed on a custom built (ReactJS) dashboard as a web app. The final solution was then presented to stakeholders such as UoS, BT, Viavi and Juniper, where it was judged. Based on the completeness of the solution, UX of the dashboard and overall presentation, my team won the event - something I am very proud of.
