Automated Vehicle Technologies Group sits within the Type Approval Authority, and is involved in developing and implementing the policy for the certification of automated vehicles in the UK. Certification subjects include;- UNECE R157 Automated Lane Keeping Systems- UNECE R155 Cyber Security- UNECE R156 Software UpdatingThe team I lead is actively involved in supporting the development of technical regulations through GRVA (UNECE Working Party on Automated/Autonomous and Connected Vehicles). We are also actively supporting the wider Department for Transport in development of future schemes for UK approval of automated vehicles, as part of the CAVPASS (Connected and Automated Vehicles Process for Assuring Safety and Security) scheme.

I provided regulatory support during the concept phase development of a luxury electric SUV, managing both current and future requirements. I chose the job title "regulatory intelligence" as being in a start-up environment needed a different approach; the phrase I used was "if you're asking the question it means no-one else has". Achievements I was particularly proud of included;- introducing a system of requirements management- identifying the risks to the project associated with GSR phase B - having a year-long dialogue with the VCA on what turned out to be a robust interpretation- getting positive feedback on my 'introduction to vehicle homologation' course for my enthusiasm for the subject

This was a high pressure, operational environment supporting the delivery of emission certifications for a variety of global OEMs and engine manufacturers. This was a challenging time for emissions certifications as the high workload needed balancing with preparations for RDE and WLTP, all while under the spectre of diesel-gate. I worked to instil the principle of robust and transparent decision making with my team so that there was confidence in the approvals we issued.
