SocialCops is on a mission to inform decision-making around the world with powerful data tools - we're building the most resilient data collection app available, a kick-ass data cleaning machine, an effortless and extensive search repository and data visualisation to tie it all up in a nice bow. My role is vague to say the least. While I was hired as a 'visual designer' of sorts, I'm already falling into place as the resident UI-guy. The months and years to come are sure to be full of challenges and change, as this fledgling data company starts to soar. The team is fantastic, the product an enigma. Let's see what happens.

Dusseldorf

Initially responsible for the design of display advertising I moved to the core product team, where I was given the opportunity to work with some fantastic people on a complex and popular product. My role was extremely varied, but my main tasks revolved around improving UX, and trying to maintain a consistent brand identity across the website and various sub-products. This was a challenging position, and during my 1 year at trivago I moved from being an intern designing web banners, to managing a small team of fellow designers in the quest for a better user experience. At the time of my working there, trivago had around 50 platforms around the world, with up to 4 million unique visits a day. It was an extremely worthwhile experience with a lot to learn. While I am glad to be moving on, I keep checking back to see how things are going, and what the fantastic design team there is continuing to achieve. Work included UI, UX, display advertising, print promotion, business cards, branding material, internal documents and a wide range of other tasks.

Shanghai City, China

After teaching in Shanghai in the Summer of 2012, I was keen to return and use my understanding of the English language as the means to fund other experiences in China. While the role itself was very rewarding, it was my time spent outside of work which really taught me the most valuable lessons.China's economy is expanding at a tremendous and often frightening rate, and one need barely step out of their front door to see the evidence. Shanghai offers its visitors possibly the starkest contrast between old and new anywhere in the world. Living here was a fantastic platform to explore my interest in photography and to consider my future in advertising/marketing/design.

Cheltenham

I thought this would be 'just a bar job'...how wrong I was. After the 3 years working at The Tavern, I am now of the opinion that what ones learns behind a bar can be some of the most valuable lessons out there. I say this without a hint of exaggeration. Both in dealing with customers and other staff I developed my people skills tremendously (along with my sense of humour), memory (cocktail recipes, 'bar facts', customer's names etc.), working under pressure (weekends in a popular bar are killer) and pro-activity. All in all I would say that although bar work is not the most demanding job in the world, it was a fantastic introduction to employment, and an opportunity to develop a handful a extremely useful skills. Above all it was an experience I will cherish for years to come.
